Friend the Secretary of State commissioned Sir John Kingman to lead an independent review of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC), the terms of reference of which included putting the FRC in a position to stand as a beacon for the best in transparency. Sir John reported on 18 December and made a number of recommendations on improving the transparency of the FRC. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/01/2019 answer text <p>I am pleased that excellent progress is being made on Made Smarter, the Government’s national industrial digitalisation programme.</p><p> </p><p>The Made Smarter Commission, co-chaired by my rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State and Juergen Maier brings together manufacturing leaders from across the sector to agree how UK manufacturing can benefit from the development and adoption of digital technology.</p><p> </p><p>The £20m North West pilot will support up to 3,000 manufacturing SMEs to adopt and exploit digital technology. There is a considerable level of interest from SMEs in the North West as well as from other regions. We will work with other regions to share the learning of the North West pilot and consider how the programme could be rolled out.</p><p> </p><p>At Autumn Budget, we announced £121m funding for the Made Smarter Digital Manufacturing Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, designed to transform the sector’s productivity. Sony have confirmed that they intend to set up a subsidiary in Amsterdam as part of their EU exit contingency planning. As has been widely reported, this will not result in any jobs being lost in the UK.</p><p> </p><p>Department for International Trade teams in the UK and Japan actively promote and support increasing investment and trade between Japan and the UK and will continue to do so after we leave the EU. As part of this, nuclear power as well as other low carbon power technologies have an important role to play in the UK’s energy future as we transition to a low carbon economy.</p><p> </p><p>We regularly compare the impact on electricity system costs of deploying technologies, as well as assessing their impact on energy security, decarbonisation and consumer bills. Wylfa and Moorside were not due to become operational until the late 2020s and there are a range of options for generating this capacity over that time-frame. National Grid has stated that there is no issue with the future security of supply. He also said that the Government will set out a new approach to financing new nuclear in the planned energy White paper in the summer. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/01/2019 answer text <p>The Government’s Industrial Strategy supports manufacturing across many sectors in a number of ways through business support, skills and R&amp;D.</p><p>Through Business Support:</p><ul><li>The Government has undertaken a business productivity review and is currently looking at how to improve manufacturing processes with 3000 industries in the North West in the Pilot for Made Smarter. The learnings from this pilot, and the conclusions of the review will benefit industry in the future.</li><li>We are making sure small businesses across all sectors including agricultural machinery, textiles and engineering, can find the information they need on their finance options and additional support in information and guidance:</li><li>The British Business Bank publishes (in partnership with industry) the Business Finance Guide, which also has an interactive online version.</li><li>The Business Support Helpline and the network of 38 Growth Hubs also provide advice and signpost businesses to sources of information and guidance. We would encourage the industries to take advantage of this resource.</li><li>78,000 SMEs have been supported in various way by the British Business Bank. The Small Business Commissioner helps with payment issues, dispute resolution and sourcing advice across the UK.</li></ul><p>Through developing Skills:</p><ul><li>The Government has developed a wide range of manufacturing apprenticeships. There are now specific apprenticeships for textile manufacturing, at both intermediate and advanced levels and a significant number of engineering apprenticeships across a range of sectors.</li><li>The Government has introduced the apprenticeship levy across the UK to encourage sustained employer investment in high quality apprenticeships. By 2020 the total annual apprenticeship investment in England will be almost £2.45bn (in 2019/20); double what was spent in 2010-11. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will receive £460m, as their fair share of the apprenticeship levy, in 2019/20. This will allow businesses to develop workforces that have the skills they need for the future.</li></ul><p>Through supporting R&amp;D:</p><ul><li>The Government has increased the rate of R&amp;D tax credit to 12% to encourage businesses to invest in the future and as a step towards meeting the 2.4% target. Friend the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and I met with Unite the Union alongside MPs on 10 January to discuss Jaguar Land Rover. The Secretary of State also met with trade unions on 14 January as part of a discussion regarding Jaguar Land Rover and its importance to the local and national economy, alongside the company, local MPs and other representatives from the Midlands and the North West. I also met with Unite the Union and JLR CEO at the last Auto Council on 15 November. At each of these meetings, Departmental officials were also present.</p><p> </p><p>The recent job losses announced by Jaguar Land Rover are concerning for the affected employees and we will do all we can to support them.
