There are a number of important factors that will affect the way in which electric
vehicle charging demand could impact the electricity system. BEIS officials engage
with National Grid over their production of the annual Future Energy Scenarios (FES),
which looks ahead to show what the future of energy in Great Britain might look like.
The latest FES shows that, under all scenarios by 2025, there will be sufficient generation
to meet peak demand. It also shows benefits provided by smart charging of electric
vehicles, for example during periods when electricity demand is low or where there
is plentiful renewable electricity generation, which can reduce peak demand and overall
system costs, as well as benefitting consumers.
