answer text
The most recent Leesman office survey by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) was conducted in September 2022, covering staff based in Manchester. In total, 59 MOD personnel participated, but of these, only 52 responded to the specified statements. The number and percentage of these respondents that answered either agree or disagree with the statements listed is set out in the table below:

Question

Number and Percentage of Respondents Agree (Figures are aggregate by response of Strongly Agree, Agree or Slightly Agree)

Number and Percentage of Respondents Disagree (Figures are aggregate by response of Strongly Disagree, Disagree or Slightly Disagree)

(i) it enables me to work productively

31 [60%]

9 [17%]

(ii) it supports me sharing ideas and knowledge amongst colleagues

40 [77%]

5 [10%]

(iii) it creates an enjoyable environment to work in

34 [65%]

8 [15%]

(iv) it contributes to a sense of community at work

33 [63%]

7 [13%]

(v) it's a place I'm proud to bring visitors to

27 [52%]

8 [15%]

The survey also included a neutral category where respondents neither agreed nor disagreed with the statements. For this reason, the percentage figures in the table do not add up to 100%.

answer text
In 2022, the Institute of Naval Medicine Toxicologist was asked to investigate if there were any causal links between exposure to Sea King helicopter exhaust fumes and the likelihood of developing cancer.

The types of cancer which are being considered are Leiomyosarcoma which is a rare cancer that develops in smooth muscle tissue and Multiple Myeloma which is a type of bone marrow cancer which often affects several areas of marrow throughout the skeleton.

The element within exhaust fumes which is potentially a cause for concern is Benzene.

The investigation concluded that there are no documented links between benzene exposure from Sea King exhaust fumes and leiomyosarcoma specifically or soft tissue sarcoma more widely.

The literature on benzene exposure in general and multiple myeloma, suggest that a link whilst improbable, is possible. Studies of Sea King aircrew have not suggested significant exposure for benzene.

I have asked for the opinion of the Independent Medical Advisory Group and once received I will provide the hon. Member with an update.
