Every year International Men’s Day offers an opportunity to highlight how outcomes for men and boys can be improved and to talk about some of the important work going on every day across Government to do this.</p><p> </p><p>Gender equality is a top development priority, and a top priority for the UK – but it will not be achieved without engaging men and boys. Too often men and boys are invisible in work towards gender equality, or portrayed as perpetrators, when they can be powerful advocates for positive change and survivors of violence themselves.</p><p> </p><p>DFID recognises that harmful social norms are the root cause of many of the challenges faced by girls and women, boys and men. In Pakistan, DFID programming saw levels of corporal punishment experienced by boys decrease by 26%. The UK is firmly committed to ensuring aid reaches the most marginalised and vulnerable, including older people, in conflict and humanitarian crises.</p><p>Without high quality disaggregated data, designing and delivering effective programmes and responses that are inclusive of older people is almost impossible. That’s why DFID was one of the first organisations to adopt the Inclusive Data Charter. From Uganda and Ethiopia to Bangladesh, UK support is tackling malnutrition in tens of thousands of refugee children and young people around the world.</p><p> </p><p>Since 2015 DFID has reached 60.3 million people with nutrition services in 25 countries, including Bangladesh, Somalia, Myanmar, Ethiopia and Yemen. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 31/10/2019 answer text <p>The UK championed the prevention and treatment of malnutrition as a core aspect of universal health coverage at the high-level meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in September. This is key to ending preventable deaths of mothers, new-borns, and children, given that malnutrition drives 45% of child deaths – a top priority for the UK as recently announced.</p><p>To support countries to achieve universal health coverage the UK is also investing in health systems strengthening and service delivery that integrates nutrition in countries such as Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We have also taken steps to integrate nutrition more strongly into global health initiatives such as the Global Financing Facility. Over 7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. The health system has collapsed, leading to the return of deadly diseases such as polio and diphtheria. Venezuelans’ access to basic goods such as medicines and food is extremely limited, leading to high levels of food insecurity and increased child malnutrition. To date we have provided over £4 million in humanitarian aid inside Venezuela to respond to the most severe needs, including supporting malnourished children and providing vaccinations to tackle deadly diseases. Our support is also enabling vulnerable people moving across Venezuela to reconnect with their families through phone calls and internet access. In September the UK announced that we would be significantly increasing our £14.5 million regional response by an additional £30 million to meet the needs of those in Venezuela and across the region; a portion of this will be provided to current partners inside Venezuela in the coming weeks to meet immediate needs while we explore the best options for programming the majority of our new funding in the coming years.</p><p>The UK is the largest donor to the Education Cannot Wait Fund which has provided $14 million towards the Venezuela crisis response across the region, including $7 million inside Venezuela to support 75,000 children and adolescents by providing better access to education as well as quality and safe learning opportunities.</p> answering member constituency South West Wiltshire answering member printed Dr Andrew Murrison question first answered 04/11/2019 17:32:47 answering member 1466 label Biography information for Dr Andrew Murrison

There are increasing reports of gender-based violence and human trafficking for sexual exploitation as people seek alternative routes out of Venezuela. The UK has provided £2 million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies across seven countries in the region to meet the immediate basic needs of those on the move including providing emergency shelter and health services. In addition, the UK was the second largest donor to the Global Concessional Financing Facility for Colombia, providing £8 million to help unlock concessional loans to support Colombia in continuing to host over 1.4 million Venezuelans.</p><p>DFID provides significant core funding to multilateral organisations, including the United Nations and the Red Cross movement, who are providing emergency humanitarian support as part of the international response in the region. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 04/11/2019 answer text <p>Millions of tuberculosis cases continue to go undiagnosed and untreated each year – identifying these is essential to ending the tuberculosis epidemic, which killed 1.5 million people globally in 2018. We are pleased to note the improvement in the number of cases of tuberculosis identified as confirmed by the World Health Organisation Global Tuberculosis Report published on 17 October. 7 million people with tuberculosis were identified globally in 2018, including 600,000 more people than in 2017.</p><p> </p><p>The Global Fund has played an important part in this improvement. A joint initiative between the Global Fund, the Stop TB Partnership and the World Health Organisation aims to accelerate progress in finding people with tuberculosis in 13 countries with the highest disease burden. We remain committed to the global effort and the World Health Organisation End Tuberculosis Strategy. We are proud to be at the forefront of work to prevent, detect and treat tuberculosis, including funding research to develop new treatments to tackle drug resistant tuberculosis. Our commitment to provide £1.4 billion to the latest replenishment of the Global Fund will help provide tuberculosis treatment and care for over 2 million people.</p><p> </p><p>A new tuberculosis vaccine could potentially have a significant effect on reducing tuberculosis deaths, and there is cautious optimism about the results for one potential vaccine, although there is still a very high degree of uncertainty for this high-risk research.
