answer text
A large proportion of funding from the NPIF – established at Autumn Statement 2016 and expanded to £31bn at Autumn Budget 2017 – has already been allocated to its four target sectors: transport, housing, digital communications and R&D. Breakdowns within these sectors can be found on page 44 of the 2017 Autumn Budget document. Specific projects are selected through a variety of mechanisms that are tailored to achieve programme goals and ensure high value for money.

Funding allocations from the NPIF are not specifically made by region. However the NPIF is intended to fund projects that help to boost productivity and prosperity throughout the UK and across regions. For example, at the Autumn Budget 2017, the government made an allocation specifically benefitting the North East, announcing £337m of new funding from the NPIF to replace rolling stock on the Tyne & Wear Metro. It also established a new £1.7bn Transforming Cities Fund. This funding will be widely distributed, with £840m of per capita funding to be transferred to the six Mayoral Combined Authorities with directly elected mayors, and £840m open for competition for transport projects in cities. These announcements and others demonstrate a commitment to invest to improve productivity in all UK regions.

answer text
The proportion of people in absolute poverty is at record lows. Since 2010 there are 600,000 fewer people, with 200,000 fewer children, in absolute poverty. Work is the most effective way out of poverty and unemployment has not been lower since 1975. We are helping people retain more of what they earn by raising the personal allowance, successive increases mean that a basic rate tax payer will be £1,075 better off in 2018-19 than in 2010-11, and to help with the cost of living we are also freezing tax on fuel and alcohol. To support working parents we are introducing Tax Free Childcare, providing support of up to £2000 per year for each child, and are doubling free childcare available for 3 and 4 year olds to 30 hours a week, saving in total around £5,000 a year per child. We are also banning letting agent fees and have published a draft bill to require Ofgem to implement a cap on standard variable and default energy tariffs. However, there is more to do and the government is committed to delivering a country that works for everyone. Last April, the government published its “Improving Lives: Helping Workless Families” strategy. This focused on measures that tackle the root causes of poverty, including specifically problem debt.

answer text
Improving social mobility is at the heart of the government’s ambition to make Britain a country that works for everyone. A strong economy means there are more job opportunities and that wages are higher, both of which are vital to improve social mobility. The Autumn Budget committed to tackling poverty, improving skills, and ensuring that every generation can look forward to a better standard of living than the one before.

Since 2010 there are 600,000 fewer people, including 200,000 fewer children, in absolute poverty (before housing costs), and employment has risen to near record levels in the UK, accounting for the bulk of GDP growth over the last seven years. The Autumn Budget announced further action to raise living standards by increasing the National Living Wage and to make progress on delivering the manifesto commitment to raise the personal allowance to £12,500. Furthermore, the Budget announced £406m of investment in skills, with a focus of mathematics and digital skills, thereby helping people obtain the abilities they need to secure better paid and highly skilled jobs.
