answer text
Like successive Governments before it, the Government expresses its sincere regret about the manner in which Chagossians were removed from BIOT in the 1960s and 1970s. For the reasons set out in the Written Ministerial Statement of 16 November 2016, the Government does not intend to reverse its decision against resettlement. In light of that decision, the Government has not reconsidered the prohibition on right of entry established under the 2004 BIOT (Constitution) Order. The Government is continuing its work with Chagossian communities in Mauritius, Seychelles and the UK with regard to how to implement the approximately £40 million support package which was announced at the same time.
more like this

answer text
Security related estimates were based on comparable military facilities in similarly remote locations. The consultation document made clear that these estimates would need to be refined following a detailed assessment. As set out in the Exchange of Notes with the United States concerning the British Indian Ocean Territory, the employment of contract personnel on Diego Garcia is the responsibility of the United States.
more like this

answer text
On 16 November 2016, the Government announced its decision not to support the resettlement of Chagossians to the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) on the grounds of feasibility, defence and security interests, and cost to the British taxpayer. At the same time the Government announced a support package worth approximately £40million over ten years, the vast majority of which is intended to provide Chagossians in the UK, Mauritius and Seychelles with better life chances in the communities in which they currently live. As part of the package, the Government is also implementing an increased programme of heritage visits to BIOT. The next heritage visit by Chagossians is planned for later this year.
more like this

answer text
The US presence on the island of Diego Garcia is governed by a series of agreements, called Exchanges of Notes, of which the overarching agreement sets out the whole Territory should be made available for UK and US defence purposes for an initial 50 year period of 1966 to 2016. If neither side object during a two year window of December 2014 to December 2016, the agreement will continue as it stands until end December 2036. The Government welcomes the US presence on Diego Garcia and we continue to discuss with the US Government their continued presence beyond 2016. We have consulted a range of stakeholders, including the US, as we work towards a decision on resettlement of BIOT. The Government is examining its policy closely and will announce developments to Parliament and the public in due course.
more like this
