answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/01/2024 answer text <p>On 24 January 2023, the Government announced plans to publish the Major Conditions Strategy, which will focus on tackling the six major conditions groups: cancers, mental ill-health, cardiovascular disease including stroke and diabetes, dementia, chronic respiratory diseases, and musculoskeletal disorders, which together account for approximately 60% of ill-health and early death in England. Addressing cancer together with other major conditions will allow the Department and NHS England to focus on similarities in approach, ensuring care is better centred around the patient.</p><p>Following the call for evidence for a 10-year cancer plan in 2022, the Department received over 5,000 submissions. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/01/2024 answer text <p>The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is the regulator in the United Kingdom for human medicines and is responsible for enforcing the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. The MHRA has identified the illegal sale and supply of human medicines as a global challenge. This includes the sale of prescription drugs from unregulated sources. Criminal gangs, often based overseas, advertise medicines through illicit websites resembling those of legitimate pharmacies, while others exploit online marketplaces or sell social media platforms.</p><p>The MHRA has a dedicated Criminal Enforcement Unit (CEU) that works with partners across government and policing to prevent and disrupt this illegal trade and to bring to justice those involved. The CEU monitors online channels for evidence of illegal activity and takes proportionate regulatory action. This includes using the full range of the Agency’s powers to investigate and prosecute offenders where necessary and appropriate. The unit also works to remove illegally trading websites and remove criminal profits from offenders. The national NHS Diabetes Programme (NDP) develops policies and provides leadership and support to ICBs to improve diabetes care and outcomes.</p><p>The NDP ensures local health care systems can identify inequalities in diabetes care and outcomes through National Diabetes Audit data that contains demographic information such as age, deprivation, ethnicity. They train in both the acute sector and primary care to gain a rounded patient centred clinical experience. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/01/2024 answer text <p>The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan (LTWP) sets out the steps the National Health Service and its partners need to take to deliver an NHS workforce that meets the changing needs of the population over the next 15 years.</p><p>The Plan will focus on expanding enhanced, advanced, and associate roles to offer modernised careers, with a stronger emphasis on the generalist and core skills needed to care for patients with multimorbidity, frailty or mental health needs. This includes setting an ambition to grow the proportion of staff in these newer roles from approximately 1% to 5% in the next 15 years. As part of this, we will increase physician associate training places to over 1,500 by 2031/32. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/01/2024 answer text <p>Physician associates (PAs) are already a valued and integral part of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team. United Kingdom and international evidence highlights the contribution of PAs to healthcare teams.</p><p>One study published by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) in 2019 found that PAs positively contributed to the medical and surgical team, patient experience and flow, and to supporting the clinical teams' workload, and that they have the potential to contribute further with an expansion of their role. The review also found that PAs undertook significant amounts of ward-based clinical administration related to patients’ care and were reported to be safe.</p><p>Health Education England, now NHS England, and NIHR-funded research undertaken and/or led by Professor Vari Drennan MBE between 2011 and 2020 on the role of PAs in England is renowned evidence in this area and publicly available.</p><p>As part of its work to implement the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, NHS England will continue to seek feedback from employers, regulators, Royal Colleges and professional bodies regarding the PA role and will work to develop and implement any recommendations.</p> answering member constituency Pendle answering member printed Andrew Stephenson question first answered 17/01/2024 17:35:57 answering member 4044 label Biography information for Andrew Stephenson
