answer text <p>Security of the UK border is our priority. Basing UK controls in France enables Border Force to stop illegal migrants before they reach our shores. <br><br>Since 2010, this Government has invested millions in strengthening the security of our border in Calais and other key ports. We have bolstered physical security in Calais, upgraded technology and equipment and increased joint intelligence work with the French.<br><br>The Home Secretary and French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve set out a number of commitments in a joint declaration on 20 September to tackle problems at the port of Calais, including £12 million from the UK Government towards bolstering security and infrastructure. <br><br>Their declaration also reaffirms their commitment to closer working by UK and French law enforcement agencies to target organised crime gangs behind people trafficking and smuggling.<br><br>Recent improvements include a total of £5.6 million to improve security at Calais and other ports in Northern France, helping to protect the UK border.<br><br>We have invested £2 million to detect people hiding in lorries by upgrading vehicle scanning equipment with the latest technology; and have increased the number of sniffer dogs stationed at Calais and other ports.<br><br>We are further strengthening physical security by investing nearly £400,000 in thermo-detection security cameras and enhanced secure perimeter fencing around the Calais port and the Channel Tunnel at Coquelles. <br><br>Further to the £12 million we have committed, earlier this year the Home Office also agreed to provide £3 million for a range of security measures across the ports in Northern France. We are pressing the Calais Chamber of Commerce to allow those measures to be implemented.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

answer text <p>Since Her Majesty's Passport Office (HMPO) starting collecting this data in February 2014, 62 cases of passports wrongly delivered or packages damaged on delivery have been reported and investigated by HMPO and this has resulted in passports being cancelled. Subject to the outcome of the investigation, a new passport is issued to the passport holder. This is 0.0017% of the total passports issued for this period. <br><br>New passports are sent to customers by secure courier in the UK and overseas, any expired passports submitted with applications are returned to customers in the UK using second class post and overseas by secure courier which the customer pays for. In the 2013-14 financial year securely delivering new passports in the UK cost £17 million, overseas the cost was £6.25 million. <br>It is not possible to identify separately the cost of returning expired passports to customers in the UK.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p /> <p>Between April 2011 and June 2014, 2,959 Syrians and their dependants were granted asylum in the UK at initial decision. <br><br>In the same period, 74 Syrians and their dependants were granted Humanitarian Protection/ Discretionary Leave and Other grants (grants under family and private life rules). In addition, 50 Syrian nationals have beengranted Humanitarian Protection under the Vulnerable Persons Relocation scheme since it began in April 2014.<br><br>The Home Office publishes statistics on grants of asylum, humanitarian protection/discretionary leave/other grants at initial decision to main applicants and dependants in Tables as_02 and as_02_q (Asylum data tables Volume 1 and Volume 2) within the Immigration Statistics release. answer text <p /> <p>As the Prime Minister made clear in his statement on 1 September, Official Report, Column 23, the Government has ‘taken a wide range of measures, including stopping suspects from travelling to the region by seizing passports, barring foreign nationals from re-entering the United Kingdom, legislating so that we can prosecute people for terrorist activity, even where that activity takes place overseas, and bringing forward emergency legislation, for instance to safeguard our use of communications data.’<br><br>He also announced that the Government will bring forward legislation to strengthen powers in specific areas, including disrupting suspects from travelling and dealing decisively with those <br>already here who pose a risk. Details of that legislation will be brought forward at the earliest opportunity.<br><br>A wide range of offences already exists on the statute books, including in the Terrorism Acts 2000 and 2006, under which individuals can be prosecuted if there is evidence they have <br>committed terrorism offences by supporting ISIL. In particular, where there is evidence that individuals are planning, promoting, funding, facilitating or participating in terrorist activities the police and Crown Prosecution Service will seek to prosecute them. Each case is considered individually. If the police refer a case to the Crown Prosecution Service, they consider whether there is sufficient evidence of any offence, and if so, whether it is in the public interest to prosecute.</p><p />
