answer text
There are no current plans to review or extend the prescription charge medical exemptions list to include cystic fibrosis or other long-term conditions. Approximately 89% of prescription items are dispensed free of charge in England and there are arrangements in place to help those with the greatest need. Eligibility depends on the patient’s age, whether they are in qualifying full-time education, whether they are pregnant or have recently given birth, or whether they are in receipt of certain benefits or a war pension. Those with cystic fibrosis or another long-term condition may therefore meet the eligibility criteria for prescription charge exemptions and be in receipt of free prescriptions.

To support those who do not qualify for an exemption of prescription charges, the cost of prescriptions can be capped by purchasing a prescription pre-payment certificate, which can be paid for in instalments. A holder of a 12-month certificate can get all the prescriptions they need for just over £2 per week. Additionally, people on a low income who do not qualify for an exemption from prescription charges can also seek help under the NHS Low Income Service, which provides help with health costs on an income-related basis.

answer text
NHS Digital publishes Hospital and Community Health Services workforce statistics for England. These include National Health Service staff working in hospital trusts and clinical commissioning groups, but excludes staff working in primary care, general practitioner surgeries, local authorities, and other providers. Within the statistics nurses are assigned a ‘setting’ in which their primary activities take place. The data shows that there are 59,374 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) nurses primarily within a community care setting, as at July 2022, the latest data available. The number of FTE nurses working primarily in a community setting has increased by 4,487 (8.2%) since July 2019. Community care settings are defined as community services, school nursing, community learning disability services and community mental health services. This number does not include health visitors.
more like this

To reduce unnecessary expenditure on agency staff in the NHS, in 2015 NHS England introduced measures to bring agency spending under control. Measures involved the introduction of price caps limiting the amount a Trust can pay to an agency for temporary staff. Since then, total spend on agency staffing has fallen by c.£1.2bn per year, from a peak of £3.6bn in 2015/16 to £2.4bn at the end of 20/21.
