answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/05/2024 answer text <p>We are implementing the mandatory rollout of the ATRS in phases, with the current, first phase focusing on the 16 largest ministerial departments, plus HMRC.</p><p> </p><p>The Department of Science, Innovation and Technology and the Central Digital and Data Office are working with these departments to map their in-scope algorithmic tools and draft their first ATRS records accordingly. These departments have now all reviewed a draft version of the scope and exemptions policy. We expect to circulate a finalised version of the policy by the end of May.</p><p> </p><p>Regarding timelines for the wider rollout, expect these Phase One departments to publish their first ATRS records by the end of July. Departments finding no tools in scope will be required to submit a nil return. As part of this, it will evaluate the direct impact of advanced AI systems on individuals and society - including how people are affected by interacting with these systems and the ways AI systems are being used in both private and professional contexts. Part of this work will explore the impacts of frontier AI on democracy, including elections. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/02/2024 answer text <p>In the AI white paper consultation response, we announced that use of the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS) will become a requirement for all central government departments, with an intent to extend this to the broader public sector over time. Following cross-government agreement and public announcement of the overall policy earlier this month, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Central Digital and Data Office are working with government departments to finalise the detailed scope (including some limited but necessary exemptions, e.g. for national security reasons), and an agreed timeline for compliance. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/01/2024 answer text <p>The £30 million AI and Data Science Conversion Course programme was established in 2020 to broaden the supply of talent in the UK AI labour market. It funded universities to develop masters level AI or data science courses suitable for non-STEM students and 2,600 scholarships for students from backgrounds underrepresented in the tech industry.</p><p> </p><p>We are already seeing the <strong>positive impact</strong> the programme is having in addressing the AI skills gap. As of March <a href="https://www.officeforstudents.org.uk/publications/evaluation-of-new-data-science-and-artificial-intelligence-conversion-masters-courses/" target="_blank">2023</a> 6,300 students have enrolled on the programme, almost three times our targets. 73% of scholarships awarded to women, 35% awarded to Black students, and 26% awarded to disabled students. The courses are successfully converting non-STEM students to enter the AI labour market: 88% of employed graduates were in employment directly related to AI or data science, either in the public or private sector.</p><p> </p><p>In 2023 an industry co-funding element was added, whereby industry could support the programme through in-kind support or scholarship funding. As of November <a href="https://www.officeforstudents.org.uk/publications/evaluation-of-artificial-intelligence-and-data-science-scholarship-funding/" target="_blank">2023</a>, this amounted to over £6.5 million in in-kind support and scholarship funding. These summaries contain commercially sensitive information, as well as information about special measures put in place to tackle content related to the conflict, which could be exploited by bad actors if published.</p><p>However, the Government has been clear with platforms that they should be adequately protecting their users. The Government is in regular contact with platforms as part of the process of closely monitoring their responses.
