answer text
The government firmly believes that the UK and European countries should continue to give young people and students the chance to benefit from each other’s world-leading universities following our exit from the European Union.

The next generation of EU programmes is currently being discussed in the EU. This includes the proposed regulation for the 2021-27 Erasmus+ programme, which has reached a partial general approach in the Council of the European Union.

Improving social mobility is a priority for this government and we want everyone to have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or where they grew up. For this reason, the government welcomes the aim of the Commission’s proposal to make the next programme more accessible to participants, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

We will continue to participate in discussions on the draft regulation while we remain an EU Member State and are considering options for future participation in the next Erasmus+ programme. Of course, the text of the regulation has not been finalised, including important aspects such as the terms of third-country participation, and we will need to consider the regulation as a whole.

Ultimately, any decisions about our participation in the Erasmus+ programme will also be a matter for wider negotiations about our future relationship with the EU.

answer text
The department is encouraging more students into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and training at all stages from primary school to higher education. We are improving careers advice in schools so that young people are aware of the high quality options available for both technical and academic routes into STEM. They also have access to information about the variety of careers that STEM pathways have to offer. STEM activities, including employer talks and work visits, are built into school career programmes and the Careers & Enterprise Company funds opportunities for young people to meet a wide range of STEM employers.

As part of the UK’s Industrial Strategy, the government has committed substantial spending on mathematics, digital and technical education to increase the take-up and better teaching of STEM subjects in schools. For example, the department is funding an £84 million programme to improve computing teaching and participation, and the Advanced Maths Premium, which aims to support schools and colleges in tackling some of the financial barriers to increase participation in post-16 maths. We also fund the Stimulating Physics Network and Isaac Physics to improve the take up of physics post-16, especially among girls.

answer text
Britain has a vibrant commercial space sector and plays a leading role in international space science. Scotland has end-to-end capabilities from Satellite design and manufacture to the use of space data and services in day-to-day applications. Indeed:

In 2015 & 16, more satellites were manufactured in Glasgow than any other European city,

The number of space organisations in Scotland grew by 26% between 2014/15 & 2016/17,

Scottish space organisations employ almost 1 in 5 of the UK space workforce.

We want to ensure that our space industry, one of the fastest-growing industries in the UK economy, covers the whole of the UK. In July 2018, we announced £31.5 million in grant funding to support development of a new vertical spaceport in Sutherland, providing a much-needed boost to rural Scotland.

We are equipping the UK with the Space facilities we will need in the future. The National Satellite Test Facility now being built in Harwell with £99m of investment from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund will provide crucial new test facilities for an expanding space manufacturing sector.

The UK Space Agency also co-invests with the Satellite Applications Catapult in a network of five regional Centres of Excellence in Satellite Applications across the UK, including the Scottish Centre of Excellence hosted by the University of Strathclyde. The Centres raise awareness of opportunities in the space sector, publicise funding calls and broker collaborative partnership, including with local universities.
