This means that everyone with the capability to succeed in HE should have the opportunity, regardless of their background, ethnicity, gender, or where they grew up.</p><p> </p><p>The Office for Students (as the regulator for higher education in England) has a duty to promote equality of opportunity in relation to access and participation in HE and we expect to see further progress, particularly amongst the most selective institutions.</p><p> </p><p>Overall numbers of students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are rising. The share of students studying science subjects at English HE providers has increased from 41% in 2010/11 to 45% in 2016/17.</p><p> </p><p>Despite rising STEM student numbers, we are far from complacent. The Department for Education is committed to tackling the gender imbalance in STEM subjects, and has invested in programmes to address female participation, particularly in subjects like computing and physics. This includes the Stimulating Physics Network which has a specific strand focusing on increasing the number of girls studying physics A level. A Gender Balance in Computing Pilot Programme will be launched this year to identify practical interventions that schools can implement to improve girls’ participation in computing.</p><p> </p><p>They are also funding a new £84 million programme to improve computing teaching and participation, and the Advanced Maths Premium which aims to support schools and colleges in tackling some of the financial barriers to increase participation in post-16 maths.</p><p> </p><p>The department is improving careers advice in schools so that young people are aware of the high quality options available for both technical and academic routes into STEM and that they have access to information about the variety of careers that STEM pathways have to offer. Alongside the review, the Office for Students (OfS) has been carrying out the second year of a pilot of subject-level TEF. This will conclude shortly and the OfS will publish its findings. Many scholars funded by the UK go on to take up senior leadership positions in their home countries, and the strong bond they have formed with the UK enhances our direct and indirect influence abroad.</p><p> </p><p>This enhances our diplomatic work, our efforts in promoting increased trade and investment and supports our national security through increased goodwill and cooperation.</p><p> </p><p>The Chevening Scholarship, sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), funds between 300-400 scholars a year from across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), 400-500 including North Africa. The FCO have awarded scholarships to over 8000 scholars across SSA since the programme began.</p><p> </p><p>In August 2018 my right hon. Friend, the Prime Minister, announced an additional £2.7 million to fund up to an extra 100 scholarships across SSA, and in May 2019 my right hon. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/05/2019 answer text <p>EU students and staff make an important contribution to our universities and it is testament to our system that so many students from abroad choose to come and study here.</p><p>I know that students, staff and providers are concerned about what EU exit means for study and collaboration opportunities. To help give certainty, in July 2018, we announced guarantees on student finance for EU nationals. These guarantees are not altered if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.</p><p>EU nationals who start a course in England in the 2019/20 academic year or before will continue to be eligible for ‘home fee’ status and student finance support from Student Finance England for the duration of their course, provided they meet the residency requirement. We recognise how important it is that students and institutions have information on eligibility for student support before applications for courses open.</p><p>Applications for courses starting in academic year 2020/21 do not open until September 2019. Work on the review is still ongoing. The independent panel will report before the government concludes the overall review.</p><p> </p><p>The current student loan statements are fit for purpose, providing borrowers with the relevant information about their accounts, including loans balance, repayments made and interest accrued over the previous tax year. Student loan borrowers currently receive account statements annually.
