answer text
Data on whether students were not in education, employment, or training 12 months after leaving school is not held centrally. The department publishes statistics on destinations of students in the year after they finish key stage 4 or 16-18 study. Destination measures show the percentage of students with sustained participation in education or employment over six months following the end of their phase of study.

The table attached shows the percentage of students who did not sustain their employment or education destination throughout the six-month period in (a) Ashfield local authority district, (b) Nottinghamshire and (c) England after completing key stage 4 16-18 study (having studied A levels or other advanced level qualifications).

Information on pupil destinations is published annually on GOV.UK at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/statistics-destinations.

The department also publishes an estimate of the number and proportion of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) in each local authority based on information submitted by local authorities about young people’s participation in education or training in their area. They are an average for November to January each year. The information can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/neet-data-by-local-authority-2012-16-to-18-year-olds-not-in-education-employment-or-training.

answer text
The department is delivering the recommendations of the Maynard Taskforce to improve access to apprenticeships for people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. We have adjusted the minimum standard for English and mathematics for people with a learning difficulty or a disability who have an Education, Health and Care Plan, a statement of Special Educational Need or a Learning Difficulty Assessment. In addition, British Sign Language (BSL) is now an alternative to English Functional Skills for those apprentices with BSL as their first language.

We also offer providers an additional £150 a month where the cost of supporting an apprentice is higher. If further support is required, providers can claim up to £19,000 for each apprentice in a funding year from the Learning Support Fund. In agreement with the Education and Skills Funding Agency, exceptional Learning Support is available for specific cases that requires funding in excess of this.

End-Point Assessment Organisations are required to make sure there is fair access for those with disabilities, by having a policy of reasonable adjustments. Apprentice employers and training providers are also obliged under equalities law to offer reasonable adjustments for disabled apprentices. Access to Work funding is available from the Department for Work and Pensions to support adjustments that apprentices may need in the workplace.

answer text
On the day the department published its statutory guidance, we shared it with a wide range of education and careers sector organisations. They distributed this guidance to schools, education and training providers and careers professionals within their networks.

We have also promoted our statutory guidance on the deparment’s Twitter account, which has over 267,000 followers. Future plans to remind schools of their new responsibilities to offer access to training providers include further department communication and promotion through ministerial speeches and articles.

The Baker Clause forms an important part of the government’s careers strategy, published in December 2017. We are working closely with The Careers & Enterprise Company and The Gatsby Charitable Foundation to promote the careers strategy widely. The Careers & Enterprise Company has been using their networks and advisory groups to make sure schools receive relevant information and continues to provide practical support and advice to schools.

Some school leavers are not yet ready for that step, and the department is developing a high quality offer for all young people including a transition offer for those who have the potential to study for a T level but who are not yet ready to do so.

The transition offer will be a flexible programme with a strong focus on mathematics and English and all suggestions are welcome for what could be included in the programme. The department has recently sought views through the public consultation on the implementation of T levels, including what other support should be considered as part of the programme, more details will be published in the spring.
more like this
