answer text
As a Government Major Project, the 100,000 Genomes Project has been under regular review by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) which provides independent assurance of the most complex and strategically significant projects across Government. As part of this, the 100,000 Genomes Project has undergone several significant reviews which considered the Project’s delivery, requiring the collation of extensive documentation evidencing the progress of the Project and several days of interviews with key stakeholders. Conclusions of each review were shared across delivery partners to inform successful delivery of the Project.

The Department, Genomics England and NHS England recognised the importance in embedding robust testing, assessment and evaluation throughout the delivery of the Project to inform the introduction of whole genome sequencing in the National Health Service under the new Genomics Medicine Service.

more like this

answer text
The most recent school census (January 2016) shows that 520 nursery pupils were attending free schools. The census is available here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/schools-pupils-and-their-characteristics-january-2016

This census does not include data for the 20 primary free schools that opened in September 2016. The number of nursery pupils attending these schools will be included in the January 2017 school census, which is due to be published in June this year.

In January this year the Department announced £50 million of capital funding to help create almost 9,000 new places for children eligible for 30 hours of free childcare. This will support the expansion of a range of nurseries and pre-schools, and we expect free schools to make a modest contribution to the creation of additional nursery places.
more like this

answer text
Funding for the free early years entitlements is allocated on a local authority basis. Prior to 2013-14, local authority funding allocations for early years were not separately identified within the Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG). Instead, they were part of the total DSG allocated to each local authority. Early years allocations for 2010-11 are not therefore available.

The new funding rates under our proposed early years national funding formula from 2017-18, can be found here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/early-years-funding-changes-to-funding-for-3-and-4-year-olds

The consultation on these new rates has now closed and the Government is preparing its response.
more like this

answer text
The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards for the provision of learning, development and care for children from birth to age five, supporting early years providers to prepare young children for school and improve their life chances by delivering high-quality early education.

The latest EYFS Profile results show that the gap between disadvantaged children and their peers has narrowed – 51% of children eligible for free school meals (FSM) achieved a good level of development (GLD) in 2015, compared to 45% in 2014. This is the equivalent of an extra 5,800 children eligible for FSM achieving a GLD. The results for 2015-16 are due to be published in November this year at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/statistics-early-years-foundation-stage-profile

We want all children, regardless of their starting point, to have access to high-quality early education and childcare, as we know this is what makes the difference to outcomes. To help close the gap between disadvantaged children and their better-off peers we introduced the early learning programme for two-year-olds in September 2013. Around 160,000 of the most disadvantaged two-year-olds are already benefiting. We have also introduced the Early Years Pupil Premium, worth £50 million a year, which helps providers close the gap in school readiness between disadvantaged children and their peers.

Research shows high-quality early education has long lasting benefits for children. Analysis of the evidence from the Effective Pre-school, Primary and Secondary Education Project has shown that pre-school is of particular importance to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Department has commissioned a major piece of longitudinal research – the Study of Early Education and Development – to understand more about how high-quality early education affects attainment and social and behavioural development up to age seven. Findings are forthcoming and will be published at: http://www.seed.natcen.ac.uk/reports.aspx
