answer text
We will ensure the UK benefits from world-changing economic trends to build the industries of the future. In our Industrial Strategy we have set out four Grand Challenges where Britain can lead the global technological revolution: in artificial intelligence and the data revolution; the global shift to clean growth; the ageing society; and the future of mobility – where we will build on our strengths to shape new markets and enhance the UK’s competitive advantage.

As we made clear in the Industrial Strategy White Paper, we will use all the policy levers at our disposal, including government procurement, to achieve success in the Grand Challenges. We will drive innovation not only by supporting research and development, but also through the creation and shaping of new markets. Where appropriate, we will look to take a mission-oriented approach to guide these efforts, bringing industry, researchers and government together to solve practical problems and accelerate innovation.

answer text
There is on ongoing activities through UK Research and Innovation which brings together the seven Research Councils, Innovate UK and funding for university research through Research England. Companies have opportunities to bid for funding projects through connecting services for innovators such as Knowledge Transfer Network and Enterprise Europe Network. Details of funding opportunities are also published on www.gov.uk.

Since 2016, Innovate UK has put in place regional managers throughout the UK, including in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These managers are working with local stakeholders to strengthen relationships with key players in cities and regions, as well as to ensure that businesses throughout the regions and nations understand the offer from Innovate UK. Over the last 12 months Innovate UK have held 10 specific regional events aligned with and co-developed with each region, (e.g. the recent ‘NW Innovation’ event with Jürgen Maier), as well as participating in flagship events such as the Wales Festival of Innovation, Northern Ireland Science Festival, and Great Expedition of the North. We are also participating in innovation strategy boards throughout the UK, including those reporting to Ministers such as the Can Do Forum in Scotland, and Innovation Advisory Council for Wales. This will have real impact as Local Industrial Strategies are developed in the coming year

answer text
As part of our future partnership with the EU, the UK will look to establish an ambitious future agreement on science and innovation that ensures the valuable research links between us continue to grow.

The Government has been taking rigorous and extensive analysis work to support our exit negotiations, as any responsible Government should, in order to inform our understanding of how EU exit will affect the UK's domestic policies and frameworks. We have been engaging with relevant stakeholders from all sectors of the economy and all regions of the UK as part of this process, and will continue to do so as we move forward.

We have been clear the Government will not provide an ongoing commentary on internal analytical work that is being carried out within government.

The UK and EU negotiating teams have reached another important milestone in the Brexit process by agreeing the terms of a time-limited implementation period. The agreement envisages that UK entities’ right to participate in EU programmes will be unaffected by the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.

In addition, the UK Government has committed to underwrite Horizon 2020 funding if necessary. This guarantees funding for UK participants in projects ongoing at the point of exit, as well as any successful bids submitted before the UK leaves the EU.
