As part of this, we are making available the latest analysis and an evidence base to enable local authorities, local partners and others to understand, and act on, the complex factors of disadvantage in their local area. Tackling child poverty and disadvantage is a priority for this government.</p><p> </p><p>We know that work is the best route out of poverty, and Universal Credit is designed to strengthen incentives for parents to move into and progress in work. We are convinced that improving long-term outcomes for disadvantaged children requires a fundamentally different approach.</p><p>The Government’s 2013 evidence review demonstrated a broad consensus that parental worklessness is a key driver of child poverty and that good educational attainment is the biggest single factor in ensuring that poor children do not end up as poor adults. It is misleading to link them to any particular cause.</p><p> </p><p>The Government’s approach has been about recognising the value and importance of work, to make work pay and to support people into work whilst protecting the most vulnerable in society.</p><p> </p><p>We are committed to ensuring that those in work are paid a fair wage; have opportunities to progress and achieve their potential.
