<p>Her Majesty's Government recognises the important role played by families within
society. Accordingly, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has supported initiatives
at the UN which positively seek to recognise this, such as resolutions at the UN General
Assembly that celebrated and subsequently followed-up on the twentieth anniversary
of the international year of the family. The government is committed to ensuring that
individual freedom, rights and diversity are protected and promoted, including with
respect to families, as per the relevant articles of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights.</p>
