answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/03/2015 answer text <p>In the run-up to Bahrain’s elections in November 2014, the British Embassy in Bahrain held regular discussions with the government of Bahrain and Bahraini political groups to discuss progress on political dialogue and encourage broad participation and engagement in the electoral process.</p><p>Following the elections, I discussed democratic participation in Bahrain with the Undersecretary of the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the UK-Bahrain Joint Working Group in December. In January, My Rt Hon and noble Friend, the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Baroness Anelay met the Bahraini justice minister and discussed the importance of holding police officers accused of mistreatment to account. Our Ambassador to Bahrain has raised our concerns over allegations of torture and mistreatment with Bahraini ministers. In addition to voicing these concerns, the UK is providing practical assistance to the Government of Bahrain to prevent the use of torture and to address allegations of its use. In particular, the UK is providing support to the Ministry of Interior’s Ombudsman and the Special Investigations Unit, both of whom have responsibility for investigating allegations against security personnel. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/03/2015 answer text <p>The UK Government is very concerned by the sentencing of Alaa Abdel Fattah to five years in prison, on charges of organising an illegal protest. At the time of his initial conviction in June 2014, my predecessor, the right hon. Member for Faversham and Mid Kent (Sir Hugh Robertson) made a statement in which he expressed his concern over the case. We have raised this case in our conversations with the Egyptian government and will continue to do so.</p><p>The UK Government also remains concerned by the Protest Law under which Alaa Abdel Fattah was charged. Egypt’s constitution rightly demands respect for freedom of expression and association. I also wrote to the Yemeni Foreign Minister on 29 December expressing our concern over Mr Hamed Kamal bin Haydara and that Yemen should comply with International legal obligations and asked that Mr Hamed Kamal bin Haydara and all other citizens are treated in line with the human rights principles set out in Yemen’s National Dialogue Conference. I also copied the letter to the Yemeni Prime Minister, Interior Minister, Human Rights Minister and the Head of the National Security Bureau. HM Ambassador also raised this case in Sana’a on 16 December. Due to the uncertain political situation in Yemen at the moment, it may be hard to make significant progress on this case. On 11 February, we suspended Embassy operations in Sana’a temporarily and have withdrawn diplomatic staff due to a deterioration in the security situation. Through the Counter Terrorism Prosecutorial Reform Initiative (CAPRI) the UK has trained 42 prosecutors in Pakistan who are now working in Anti-Terrorism Courts. The focus of this work is in Punjab, but we have also trained prosecutors from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as Baluchistan.
