answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/12/2016 answer text <p>The UK welcomes the successful conduct of the elections in The Gambia on 1 December, and congratulates the Gambian people on the orderly and legitimate expression of their desire for change. As the Minister responsible for Africa, I spoke directly to the President-elect, Mr Adama Barrow, last week, to congratulate him on his victory and to offer the UK's support. But we are deeply concerned by President Jammeh's recent rejection of the elections' clear and legitimate result and strongly condemn any attempt to disrupt the peaceful, constitutional transfer of power. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/12/2016 answer text <p>Reports that Gambian security forces loyal to President Jammeh have taken over the offices of Independent Election Commission (IEC) are a real cause for concern. Tensions remain high following President Jammeh's legal challenge to the Supreme Court to annul the election results and the increased military checkpoints on the streets. The UK is working with all international partners at the UN to ensure the democratic will of the Gambian people is enacted in a peaceful manner.
