answer text <p>HMG works closely with the Pitcairn Island Council, the Pitcairn community and other stakeholders on the protection of biodiversity on the Pitcairn Islands. We are currently drafting a revised Pitcairn Ordinance (Law) on environmental protection to entrench these protections further.</p><p>The Government is also currently funding, through Darwin Plus, a project to develop a sustainable marine and fisheries management plan for the Pitcairn Islands.</p><p>We have committed to working constructively with the Pitcairn Island Council, and other stakeholders to see if there are practical solutions for more affordable enforcement, including enhanced international co-operation, alternative sources of funding, and innovative methods to achieve the same objective.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The sustainability of the UK’s Overseas Territories is a priority for my Department and for the whole of Government. The UK Government has a fundamental responsibility and objective to ensure the security and good governance of the Territories and their peoples and to ensure the good stewardship of their natural environments. On the latter point, the government has worked closely with the Territories to mainstream environmental policy and to help them understand how their unique natural heritage can bring them positive benefits. The Government is contributing some £2 million per annum to the Darwin Fund which supports environmental management in the Territories.</p><p>The Government set out its vision and strategy for the Overseas Territories in the 2012 White Paper - The Overseas Territories: Security, Success and Sustainability. answer text <p>Since the formation of the All Progressive Congress in 2013, I have met Governor Fashola (Lagos State), Governor Amaechi (Rivers State) and Governor Shettima (Borno State). answer text <p>The UK is playing a leading role in helping Nigeria to tackle the terrorist threat from Boko Haram and related group Ansaru, working closely both with the Nigerian authorities and international partners. The UK proscribed Boko Haram in July 2013.</p><p>Following the abduction in April of the Chibok schoolgirls the Prime Minister offered a package of support including: tactical advice and training for the military to help counter terrorism; military air surveillance capacity and intelligence support to help try to locate the girls; £1 million towards the UN Safe Schools initiative. The Foreign Secretary hosted a Ministerial meeting on security in Nigeria on 12 June in London. The meeting delivered agreements from Nigeria, neighbouring countries and international partners on improved security, intelligence cooperation, and commitment both to coordination of development work in the region and to empowerment and education of women.</p><p>We are also working with Nigeria on a range of judicial and security projects to improve military capacity, policing, access to justice and prosecution of terrorists. All UK counter terrorism work is subject to the Overseas Security and Justice Assistance (OSJA) process.</p>

answer text <p>We welcome all efforts by Cameroon and Nigeria to strengthen their security cooperation to defeat Boko Haram.</p><p>I discussed Cameroon's efforts to tackle Boko Haram with the Cameroonian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister when I visited Yaoundé in May. Both signalled their willingness to work with partners to combat Boko Haram. On 12 June in London, the Cameroonian Foreign Minister attended a Ministerial meeting on security in Nigeria, hosted by the Foreign Secretary. A key outcome was regional agreement to increased levels of coordinated border patrols by Nigeria and its neighbours including Cameroon.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Terrorist attacks in Nigeria have caused great suffering in communities of different faiths and ethnicities. Boko Haram cannot be seen simply as a result of Christian-Muslim tensions and their attacks are often indiscriminate.</p><p>The British Government is committed to working with the Nigerian authorities to tackle security problems in Nigeria. We recognise the underlying issues of poverty and inequality, which lead to inter-communal tensions and conflict in Nigeria and we urge political, traditional and religious leaders to work together in order to resolve these issues. DFID are delivering a range of programmes in six of the northern Nigerian states designed to address the drivers of violent extremism and conflict.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We are unable to provide direct consular assistance in Somalia. However, while we advise against all travel to Somalia except for the cities of Hargeisa and Berbera, to which we advise against all but essential travel, we have provided some consular assistance to British nationals who have travelled to Somalia through our embassy in Addis Ababa and High Commission in Nairobi. There have been three cases so far in this financial year. There were seventeen cases in 2013-14, eight in 2012-13, nine in 2011-12, and ten in 2010-11.</p> more like this
