answer text
Music is compulsory for all children in key stages 1-3 in maintained schools. One of the requirements of the National Curriculum is that pupils are taught to play musical instruments. Schools are not permitted to charge for teaching that is required by the National Curriculum.

The Government is investing £75m in 2015-16 in a network of music education hubs. Music education hubs have four core roles, one of which is to ensure that every child aged 5-18 learns to play a musical instrument through whole class ensemble teaching. Data published by Arts Council England in March 2015 showed that 596,820 pupils in the academic year 2013/14 learned to play an instrument through whole class ensemble teaching. This teaching is provided free for pupils.

The data is available here: http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/media/uploads/Music_Education_Hubs_2014_Report_final_March_2015.pdf.

Arts Council England will publish data for the 2014-15 academic year in due course. This will include more extensive data on the number of pupils who have singing or instrumental lessons.

answer text
Local authorities have a number of statutory powers they may use in maintained schools that are “eligible for intervention”. These powers are described in more detail in the Schools Causing Concern guidance, available on GOV.UK at: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/469299/Schools_causing_concern_draft_guidance.pdf

Schools are “eligible for intervention” where they have been judged as inadequate by Ofsted, where they have failed to comply with a warning notice or where - following 2016 results – they fall within the definition of coasting. Local authorities have powers to give warning notices to maintained schools where they have concerns about unacceptable performance (e.g. where a school is below floor standards), where there has been a breakdown in leadership and governance, or the safety of pupils or staff may be being threatened.

We ran a public consultation during October to December 2015, which sought views on draft revisions to the Schools Causing Concern guidance in light of the Education and Adoption Bill. The consultation response and the revised Schools Causing Concern guidance will be published shortly.

answer text
The information is not available in the format requested. The Department publishes statistics showing, for each calendar year since 1996, the number of teachers that have qualified and entered service and the percentage that remain in service in each following year.

The number of teachers in our schools continues to grow year-on-year. Teaching has a lower turnover rate than the economy as a whole; 90 per cent of teachers in state schools stay in the profession from one year to the next. The latest data show that 72 per cent of teachers that qualified during 2009 and were in service by March 2010 were still in service five years later. Similarly, 62 per cent of teachers that qualified during 2004 and were in service by March 2005 were still in service ten years later.

These statistics are published in table C2 of the additional tables in the School Workforce in England Statistical First Release, November 2014.
