answer text <p>The UK-Africa Investment Summit brought together businesses, governments and international institutions to showcase and promote the breadth and quality of investment opportunities across Africa.</p><p>At the Summit, we announced the Trade Connect programme, which will help developing countries, benefit from the UK’s post-Brexit preferential trade arrangements by providing £20 million over 5 years to assist businesses to export more.</p><p>Through the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Act 2018, the UK intends to put in place a trade preference scheme that maintains the preferential market access we currently offer to 35 African developing countries trading under the EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP).</p><p>We are also rolling over the EU’s Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) and Association Agreements (AAs). We have signed trade agreements with eleven African countries and are seeking to conclude agreements with a further seven countries.</p><p>We will work with African partners to deepen and widen our existing trade agreements and make the UK’s preference scheme work better for them.</p>

answer text <p>The Department for International Trade (DIT) plays a critical role in promoting the UK as the natural choice for overseas investment. The Department provides support to inward investors who wish to set up in the UK.</p><p> </p><p>These services range from providing information, guidance and support on the UK business environment, to access to finance, talent and skills, visas and migration, research and innovation, and sector experts.</p><p> </p><p>DIT also provides an end-to-end service for investors, through initiatives such as the Strategic Relationship Management Programme, both in the UK and overseas, working with colleagues across government, in London, UK regions and Devolved Administrations. This suite of services helps investors prosper and succeed, which in turn leads them to reinvest further in the UK. answer text <p>Our priority is securing a deal with the European Union as this will avoid disruption to our global trading relationships. Until that deal is in place, we must prepare for all eventualities. The Government has set out what issues business, including exporting businesses, need to consider in a no-deal scenario and the Public Information Campaign directs business to that information on GOV.UK.</p><p> </p><p>The Department for International Trade’s frontline International Trade Advisers are regularly updated with the latest GOV.UK updates and information to help SMEs across England prepare for leaving the EU. International Trade Advisers are using this information to ensure SMEs are promptly referred to the latest available EU Exit business readiness information, including the HMRC Partnership Pack. My Department is also working closely with our counterparts in the Devolved Administrations to ensure that similar guidance is available to SMEs in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.</p><p> </p><p>In addition my Department continues to work closely with BEIS and HMRC to ensure that the published Public Information Campaign guidance is widely circulated. My Department has briefed Business Representative Organisations, including the BCC and CBI, on the support available to help companies prepare for the UK leaving the EU. Other Government Departments are also supporting this cross-Government effort to help SMEs as they prepare for leaving the EU. This includes a BEIS business readiness bulletin for trade associations, business representative bodies and business intermediaries and HMRC webinars for SMEs.</p>

answer text <p>The Canada-UK bilateral trading relationship is an important one and vital to our economy. Total trade between the UK and Canada in 2018 totalled £18.4bn and both sides have committed to deepening our commercial relationship further.</p><p>My Ministerial colleagues and I have regular contact with the Canadian Administration, business representatives and others, including through our diplomatic missions in Canada, to support and increase investment and trade flows.</p><p>Both the Prime Minister and PM Trudeau have publicly committed to a ‘seamless transition’ of the Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (CETA) as the UK leaves the EU and to avoid a cliff edge for Canadian and UK businesses.</p> more like this

answer text <p><strong></strong></p><p>The Government, through our overseas network, HM Trade Commissioners, and through Ministerial and Trade Envoy visits, works actively to support trade and reduce barriers for UK companies looking to export to Asia by engaging with the region’s governments and business sectors. Recently we’ve secured market access for UK dairy products to China, worth £240m over five years, and beef and lamb to Japan, worth £127m over five years. We are also lobbying multilaterally, establishing a UK Mission to ASEAN in 2019, and are considering the possibility of the CPTPP as a priority FTA once we leave the EU.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The UK produces billions of pounds worth of high-quality goods and services each year, and there is a clear demand from around the world for these products with UK exports rising 2.0% (12bn) to <strong>£626.4bn</strong>, in the 12 months ending October 2018. [<em>ONS UK Trade: October 2018</em>]. The Export Strategy, launched in August 2018, sets out how the Government will encourage, inform, connect and finance UK businesses to enable them to take advantage of this international demand.</p><p> </p><p>The Department for International Trade’s offer to UK businesses includes impartial export advice from International Trade Advisors and our overseas network in markets across the world. British businesses are also promoted via the government’s network of Trade Envoys and given assistance in the Midlands and Northern Powerhouse through our Export Champions.</p><p> </p><p>The Department also runs a major UK facing marketing campaign called “Exporting is Great” which inspires and encourages business to start exporting and seek new markets. The campaign is UK wide and includes a mobile outreach export hub.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>DIT is building on the Export Strategy with a whole of Government Approach and has recently enhanced digital service on great.gov.uk which allows business to connect to over 20,000 export opportunities and ensures finance is at the heart of its offer: in 2017/18 UKEF provided £2.5bn in support, helping 191 UK companies sell to 75 markets around the world. 77% of these companies were SMEs.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The full Export Strategy can be found here: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/export-strategy-supporting-and-connecting-businesses-to-grow-on-the-world-stage" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/export-strategy-supporting-and-connecting-businesses-to-grow-on-the-world-stage</a></p>
