answer text <p>The Government has no plans to require schools to report centrally on incidents of bullying, but the Department included questions in its School Snapshot survey in winter 2017 to obtain information on different types of bullying. Statutory guidance for schools sets out that pupils should be taught about different types of bullying, the impact of bullying and how to get help. We are committed to ensuring schools are supported and ready to teach these new subjects to high quality and have announced a budget of £6 million in 2019-20 financial year to develop a programme of support for schools. The Department is establishing an early adopter school programme to support early teaching of the new requirements. It is also working with early adopter schools to support the design of the training programme and to refine supplementary guidance to ensure that the teaching of the subjects is as effective as possible.</p><p>The Department is also providing over £2.8 million of funding between September 2016 and March 2020 to four anti-bullying organisations to support schools to tackle bullying. This includes the Anne Frank Trust who have developed the Free to Be debate programme, which encourages pupils to think about the importance of tackling prejudice, discrimination and bullying. It also includes the Anti-Bullying Alliance, whose programme has a particular focus on reducing bullying of those with special educational needs and disabilities. Between 2016-2019 the Government Equalities Office provided £3 million of funding to prevent and tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in schools. In the LGBT Action Plan published last year, it committed £1million to continue the programme until 2020.</p>

answer text <p>In December 2018, the Department announced £49.3 million funding for the first round of the Selective Schools Expansion Fund (SSEF). The Department is currently assessing bids for the second round and are due to announce successful bids in the autumn.</p><p>Underspend from the SSEF is returned to the Department's overall capital budget and can be spent on other priorities.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government announced the Teachers’ Student Loan Reimbursement scheme in October 2017, fulfilling our manifesto commitment to help new teachers stay in the profession by forgiving their student loan repayments. The scheme is a pilot that is testing the impact of offering this incentive on teacher retention. It is aimed at early career teachers of languages and science who qualified since 2013/14, and is available in specific local authorities. Information on the scheme is available here: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/guidance/teachers-student-loan-reimbursement-guidance-for-teachers-and-schools" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/guidance/teachers-student-loan-reimbursement-guidance-for-teachers-and-schools</a>.</p><p>The scheme has been designed in this way because retention is most challenging early in teachers' careers, and because science and languages are in high demand by schools.</p><p>The local authorities where teachers’ student loan reimbursement applies have high need for teachers. This is determined by the 'Defining Achieving Excellence Areas' methodology, available here: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/defining-achieving-excellence-areas-methodology" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/defining-achieving-excellence-areas-methodology</a>.</p><p>High need areas not included in the scheme are in the control group, which will enable the Department to conduct a robust evaluation.</p>

answer text <p>Penalty notices are issued to parents by schools, local authorities or the police for failing to ensure that if their child is of compulsory school age, they regularly attend the state-funded school where they are registered or at the place where alternative provision is provided for them.</p><p>The statistical publication 'Parental Responsibility Measures in England: 2017 to 2018' includes the numbers of penalty notices issued in England in table 1. The release is available here:</p><p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/parental-responsibility-measures-2017-to-2018" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/parental-responsibility-measures-2017-to-2018</a>.</p><p>The data shows the number of penalty notices issued to parents; if a parent has received more than one penalty notice then each penalty notice would be counted. The number of parents who have received a penalty notice is not available.</p><p>Collected information contains reasons for why penalty notices are issued and is broken down by 'unauthorised family holiday absence', 'arriving late' and 'absence due to other unauthorised circumstances'. Data is not collected specifically on the number issued due to truancy.</p>

answer text <p>In the Department’s Winter 2017 School Snapshot Survey, responses from secondary schools that teach Year 9 pupils were as follows: 35% of respondents stated that all their Year 9 pupils would start studying for Key Stage 4 for all subjects, 28% stated that all their Year 9 pupils would start studying for Key Stage 4 for some subjects, 9% stated that some of their Year 9 pupils would start studying for Key Stage 4 for some subjects, 27% stated that none of their Year 9 pupils would start studying for Key Stage 4.</p><p>The snapshot survey report can be found here:</p><p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/school-snapshot-survey-winter-2017" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/school-snapshot-survey-winter-2017</a>.</p><p>The information requested is not held centrally regarding administrative data of when individual schools start teaching Key Stage 4.
