answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/11/2017 answer text <p>The Capacity Market is at the heart of the Government’s plans for a reliable, flexible electricity system. It will secure the capacity required to meet peak demand in a range of scenarios through auctions held four- and one-year ahead of delivery.</p><p>The design of the Capacity Market drives fierce competition. Existing and new resources, of all technology types which are not in receipt of another subsidy, compete together. A mix of new-build projects came through in the last main capacity auction in December 2016, with significant innovation such as demand-side response and battery storage winning agreements alongside more traditional gas generation projects.</p><p>Other measures being taken to broaden the UK’s electricity generation base are the deployment of new nuclear generation (starting with Hinkley Point C).</p><p>In September, we announced the results of the second Contracts for Difference auction round which secured an additional 3.2 Giga Watts of new offshore wind capacity to be built in the early 2020’s.</p><p>Building on this, we announced our Clean Growth Strategy in October, where we committed a further £557 million for future Contracts for Difference allocation rounds with the next auction planned for Spring 2019.</p> answering member constituency Watford answering member printed Richard Harrington question first answered 29/11/2017 15:43:21 answering member 4068 label Biography information for Lord Harrington of Watford

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/09/2017 answer text <p>Local action by communities, by local businesses and by local authorities has a significant role to play in raising awareness of renewable energy and energy efficiency. We have and continue to support local organisations and groups not only to provide advice but also to lead action on these issues locally.</p><p>This Government is committed to empowering communities and these projects, which put local people in the driving seat, are an important part of a clean, secure and affordable energy system. BEIS provides the Energy Saving Advice Service covering England and Wales. In 2016, over 15,000 callers were referred to local authority energy efficiency schemes or initiatives.</p><p>Since 2013, the UK Government has committed over £16m to support community energy, including the Rural Community Energy Fund which continues to offer support and feasibility and development finance for community-scale renewable energy projects in England. The generation of renewable energy by small businesses, schools, charities and households also remains eligible for payments through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme.</p><p>This Government sees local energy, of which community energy is a key part, as an important part of a wider local energy ecosystem; with cities, municipalities and local partners driving this agenda.
