answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/07/2017 answer text <p>Centrica Storage Ltd’s decision to close the Rough gas storage facility is a commercial decision based on the age of the asset and the costs of repair.</p><p> </p><p>We have recently undertaken a full strategic assessment of our long-term gas security, including scenarios without Rough. We will publish this in due course. Shale gas is natural gas found deep underground in impermeable shale rock and requires hydraulic fracturing (or ‘fracking’) to flow.</p><p> </p><p>Shale gas could create a new British industry, provide more jobs and make us less reliant on imports from abroad. The Programme is making good progress and consumers are already benefiting from smart meters. As such, we do not have the information to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the effect on wholesale gas prices of maintaining the gas storage facility at Rough.
