Information and intelligence held on and in relation to police databases, including the Police Elimination Database, is a matter for individual police forces.

To help identify members of the police workforce who may warrant investigation due to allegations or intelligence, the National Police Chiefs’ Council has asked all forces to check their officers and staff against the Police National Database (PND). answer text
Police forces are expected to carry out vetting in line with both the College of Policing’s statutory Vetting Code of Practice and Authorised Professional Practice (APP) guidance.

The APP highlights that successful policing candidates will be asked to provide their fingerprints and a DNA sample by consent. These are checked against the relevant local and national databases before commencing employment.

The APP is non-statutory guidance which supports the consistent application of the minimum standards of vetting, set out in the Vetting Code of Practice. Principle 4 of the Vetting Code of Practice highlights that police vetting should comply with the standards laid out in the APP.

In light of significant concerns raised around vetting of the police workforce, the Home Secretary has recently asked the College of Policing to strengthen the Vetting Code of Practice to make the obligations all forces must legally follow stricter and clearer.
more like this

answer text
In order to address concerns around police vetting caused by high-profile cases of police abuse of power, the Home Secretary has asked the College of Policing to strengthen the statutory code of practice for police vetting to make the obligations all forces must legally follow stricter and clearer. Separately, the National Police Chiefs’ Council has asked all police forces to check their officers and staff against the police national database to help identify anyone who is unfit to serve.

The National DNA Database (NDNAD) can only hold the DNA profiles of people arrested for a recordable offence, under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. We have no plans to add the DNA profiles of police officers to the NDNAD.

The Police Regulations 2003 set out that a candidate for appointment as a police officer or special constable must undergo biometric vetting, with consent, and the chief officer must be satisfied with the results prior to appointment. More information on biometric checks and retention of DNA profiles are set out in the College of Policing’s vetting authorised professional practice (APP) guidance.

answer text
The cross-Government Tackling Domestic Abuse Plan invested over £230 million of cross-government funding into tackling this terrible issue.

This includes a £75 million investment for tackling perpetrators, including multi-year funding for perpetrator interventions. Perpetrator programmes aim to help change or disrupt offenders’ behaviour and they can help to stop offenders from committing a crime or from reoffending. For example, in the current financial year, we awarded grants totalling £791,822.48 to Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) in the North East for perpetrator interventions, including the Drive Project. This includes funding given to Northumbria, Durham and North Yorkshire.

In the Tackling Domestic Abuse Plan, the Home Office announced it would increase funding so that the Children Affected by Domestic Abuse Fund receives more than £4 million to organisations providing specialist support within the community to children who are experiencing domestic abuse.

answer text
Stimulating private sector investment in Research and Development (R&D) is an important part of the Government’s strategy for economy-wide investment in R&D to reach 2.4% of GDP by 2027. This will also support the Government’s goal to increase economic growth. This is why at SR21, as part of increasing public sector R&D to a record £20bn in 2024/25 and to help leverage in greater private sector R&D investment, the Government committed to a significant uplift for business innovation, with Innovate UK’s core annual budget rising from £667m in 2021/22 to £970m by 2024/25. The Government also allocated £150m over the SR period to innovation loans, providing flexible and patient capital to support business growth through innovation. In addition, Spending Review 2021 announced the new Global Britain Investment Fund, which is supporting private investment in the UK’s innovative life sciences, offshore wind and automotive manufacturing sectors.
more like this
