The costs for calculating the average daily cost of a removal centre are as below.</p><p>The costs are derived at by dividing the Total Resource Costs of running Detention Centres (Contracts, staff, Rent, Rates, Utilities and Depreciation) by the average number of bed spaces (currently 3448).</p><p>The average cost to detain an individual in immigration detention is provided on a per day basis. The current daily cost per detainee is £88.29, which corresponds to an annual cost of £32,227 (£88.29 multiplied by 365 days). This can be satisfied by any such period of time during an applicant’s life in the UK rather than the most recent five years, provided it began before 31 December 2020. If they have been found to require protection they are granted leave to remain in the UK on this basis. It is only when a person does not qualify for protection that they are required to leave the UK.</p><p>This would only happen after full consideration of the person’s claim and the exhaustion of any appeal rights.
