answer text
This Government works to protect and promote pluralistic values – including freedom of religion and belief - through its Counter-Extremism Strategy. Faith communities are crucial to tackling hatred and intolerance. Through our ‘Building a Stronger Britain Together’ programme we are supporting partners across the country to challenge extremism – including faith groups.

Protecting freedom of religion and belief is also central to the UN Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism and cuts across two of the four pillars of the UN Global CT Strategy: addressing the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism, and ensuring respect for human rights for all and the rule of law as the fundamental basis for the fight against terrorism.

The new Commission for Countering Extremism will also support our faith communities in stamping out extremism and promoting our fundamental values.
more like this

answer text
The primary responsibility for unaccompanied children in Europe lies with the State in which they are present. We are committed to making sure that the Dublin III process works effectively to ensure that vulnerable asylum-seeking children receive the protection and support they need and are reunited as soon as possible with any close family members in the UK.

We regularly engage with the Governments in the Western Balkans region on migration and provide additional support to EU Member States hosting large numbers of unaccompanied children to promote their welfare. The UK has established a £10 million Refugee Children’s Fund to support the needs of vulnerable children arriving in Europe and prioritises the needs of unaccompanied and separated children travelling through Greece and the Balkans. Support includes specialised shelters which offer 24 hour care, including psychosocial support, educational activities and legal assistance.

Since October 2015, we have provided more than £17.2 million in humanitarian assistance for refugees and migrants in the Balkans. This has provided life-saving assistance (shelter, water and sanitation, hot and cold food, medical care and protection) for the most vulnerable migrants and refugees; as well as enhanced data for better migration management and support for durable solutions.

The UK has allocated £8 million to a new Women and Girls Protection Fund which will protect girl and women refugees in Greece and the Balkans by providing shelters as a safe alternative to camp environments and strengthening national counter-trafficking mechanisms.

question text To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their response to the findings of the Report on an unannounced inspection of Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, published on 21 March, in particular that (1) too many detainees were held for prolonged periods, (2) the average length of detention was high, (3) children were detained for long periods of time due to failures in age assessment processes, (4) in one case, an incorrect Home Office age assessment led to the detention of a child for 36 days before social services confirmed that the boy was 16 years old, (5) the adults at risk policy was not yet widely understood, (6) there had been a three-fold increase in incidents of self-harm since the previous inspection, (7) the causes of self-harm had not been sufficiently analysed and there was no strategy to reduce it, and (8) four detainees had narrowly escaped fatal or serious injuries as a result of self-harm during the previous year. more like this

answer text
We are reviewing the report and its findings, but our position remains that individuals who have been found not to need protection and have exhausted all legal avenues in the UK are expected to take steps to leave the UK as soon as possible. If they do not, we will seek to enforce their removal.

The Immigration Act 2016 (‘the Act’) includes measures to remove incentives for migrants to remain in the UK where they have no lawful basis for doing so.

However, failed asylum seekers, including failed asylum seeking families may be eligible for ongoing support while there is a genuine obstacle to their departure. As now, what constitutes a genuine obstacle is expected to include non-receipt of a travel document or a medical reason why they cannot travel. We would to continue to expect failed asylum seekers to demonstrate they are taking all reasonable steps to leave the UK.

We want to support those who genuinely need our protection, but also send out a very clear message to those who seek to use the system to gain an unfair immigration advantage.

As soon as adults are granted refugee status or humanitarian protection they become eligible for skills funding – including for ESOL courses - through a provider’s adult education budget. In addition to the existing funding, an additional £3 million was distributed to colleges and other providers that deliver to learners in the areas identified by the government as having the greatest ESOL need.
