answer text
Under the Civil Service Recruitment Principles, DECC has only utilised the exceptions of short term/temporary appointments, secondments and transfers of organisations into the Civil Service – TUPE. Please note DECC only holds data from November 2010. Since this date we have made 150 exception appointments under these categories. The names of those appointed at grade 6 and below (or equivalent) are withheld under the Data Protection Act 1998. Additionally, DECC’s systems do not always record the equivalent grade for those seconded from industry and therefore we are unable to release these names under the Data Protection Act 1998. Our records confirm that we have appointed four members of the SCS as an exception – Peter Boyd, Miles Bradbury, Gordon Dunfield-Prayero and David MacKay.
more like this

answer text
Legal advice is not routinely sought on requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Where it is, the Department does not calculate the cost of internal legal advice as opposed to the cost of such advice on other matters. The Department obtains external litigation services from the Treasury Solicitor’s Department, including in relation to appeals under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. In 2013/14, the Department paid the Treasury Solicitor’s Department £18,812 for services concerning appeals under the Act. Figures for other periods since 2010 could only be provided at disproportionate cost.
more like this

answer text
In August this year, the Department confirmed a grant award under the Marine Energy Array Deployment fund of up to £10m for the development of the world’s first tidal stream array project in the Pentland Firth.

Tidal energy projects may also receive support under the Renewables Obligation and through applying for a Contract for Difference.

In October 2010, the Government published the conclusions of a 2-year feasibility study into tidal power on the Severn estuary, including a regional economic impact assessment. While the Government concluded it did not see a strategic case for public investment in a tidal energy scheme in the Severn estuary, the outcome of the feasibility study does not preclude a privately financed scheme.
