<p>Traditional orchards are listed as a habitat of principal importance for the conservation
of biodiversity under section 41 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities
Act 2006. Government agri-environment grant schemes, including Countryside Stewardship
(which replaced the Environmental Stewardship Scheme) provide financial support to
improve the condition of traditional orchards and to establish more of them.</p><p>
</p><p>In England there are 1,952 hectares of traditional orchards being managed or
established under agri-environment schemes.</p>
