unstar this property answer text
The Government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of UK and EU citizens. Our intention remains to establish a comprehensive and legally binding agreement on internal security which would enable continuing cooperation based on EU measures.

However, we are preparing for all eventualities. In a no-deal scenario, UK law enforcement agencies will use well-established alternative mechanisms to co-operate with partners on a police-to-police basis. This will include use of the INTERPOL secure network and pre-existing bi-lateral channels to facilitate police cooperation on child abduction cases.
more like this

unstar this property answer text
We are aware of Mr Shakoor's case who is an 84 year old bookshop owner. We remain deeply concerned about reports of discrimination and abuses against the Ahmadiyya community and other religious minorities in Pakistan. The Government strongly condemns the persecution of all minorities, including the targeting of innocent people based on their beliefs.

We regularly raise our concerns about the protection of minority communities, including Ahmadiyya Muslims, with the Pakistani Government at a senior level.

At the UN Periodic Review of Pakistan’s human rights record in November 2017, the UK raised concerns about limits on freedoms of expression and religion or belief, particularly for the Christian and Ahmadiyya Muslim communities, as well as the increased misuse of terror legislation to portray religious publications of minority communities as hate material.

I discussed the treatment of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community and Abdul Shakoor's case with Pakistan’s Human Rights Minister in February 2019 during my visit to Islamabad. I am pleased to report that Abdul Shakoor was released on the 18 March 2019.

We will continue to urge the Government of Pakistan to guarantee fully the rights of all Pakistani citizens, including religious minorities, and to honour its international obligations.

unstar this property answer text
The government believes that all schools can benefit from becoming an academy as part of a multi-academy trust (MAT). The department does not think it is necessary at this time to set a timescale for this ambition to be realised.

Academy conversion remains a positive choice for many schools who are voluntarily choosing to convert to enjoy the benefits of autonomy and working in collaboration with other schools as part of a MAT. More than 50% of all pupils in state funded schools in England are educated in an academy or free school. The department has been clear that maintained schools are only required to become sponsored academies, due to educational underperformance, if they are judged inadequate by Ofsted.
more like this

unstar this property answer text
A maintained school governing body may apply to my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State, to use his powers to revoke an academy order. The governing body must have agreed to apply for revocation by a majority vote for the application to be considered by the Secretary of State.

The department’s statutory guidance on schools causing concern makes clear that the Secretary of State’s power to revoke an academy order will only be used in very exceptional circumstances. These circumstances may include where a maintained school is not viable, and it is most appropriate for it to close, or where Ofsted have re-inspected the school and judged that it is no longer inadequate, and the current leadership and management is capable of driving continued improvement.

more like this
