star this property answer text <p>In support of reducing attrition of nurses in training, Health Education England has established the Reducing Pre-Registration Attrition and Improving Retention project, to work with universities to reduce unnecessary attrition and identify areas of best practice in improving retention on health training courses. The project focuses on the four fields of nursing, midwifery and therapeutic radiography and aims to increase the supply of nurses and allied health professionals by supporting HEIs and NHS service provider organisations to work collaboratively to reduce attrition and improve retention. This project is scheduled to report in the spring of 2018.</p><p> </p><p>Education and training provision for healthcare systems in the National Health Service in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales is a matter for each of the devolved administrations.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>A search of the Department’s Ministerial correspondence database between 1 May 2017 and 16 November 2017 has identified that 62 items of correspondence were received about the nursing bursaries in general.</p><p> </p><p>We are not able to identify how many of these were specifically about the reintroduction of nursing bursaries.</p><p> </p><p>This figure represents correspondence received by the Department’s Ministerial correspondence unit only.</p><p> </p><p>Between 1 May 2017 and 16 November 2017 my Rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Health has not had any specific meetings with medical professionals or patients on this topic.</p> more like this

Statistical information can be obtained from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.</p><br /><p /> <br /> <p>The Government does not have estimates of the number of student nurses who have studied for a degree and likely to start training. However we intend to make an exemption so that student nurses midwives and allied health professionals who already have a degree can access loans.</p><br /> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Developing new work based routes into nursing is a priority for the Department.</p><p> </p><p>That is why we have developed the new Nursing Associate role and Nursing Degree Apprenticeship which will open up routes into the registered nursing profession for thousands of people from all backgrounds and allow employers to grow their own workforce.</p><p> </p><p>The first 1,000 Nursing Associates were recruited to commence their training in January and the second wave of a further 1,000 Nursing Associates are due to commence training next month.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>At this stage of the application cycle, based on the data the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service published on 2 February, Health Education England (HEE) is confident that the National Health Service will be able to fill the number of nursing and midwifery training places in England.</p><p> </p><p>HEE has increased nurse training commissions by nearly 15% over the last three years and is forecasting that up to 40,000 additional nurses could be available to the NHS by 2020.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to the increase in training commissions, HEE has also implemented a number of steps to increase nurse numbers within the NHS. These include:</p><p> </p><p>- proactively promoting the Return to Practice programme, aimed at encouraging previously qualified nurses that have left the NHS, to update their skills and qualifications and return to practice within the NHS;</p><p>- the provision of flexible routes into nursing for pre-existing support staff; and</p><p>- working closely with universities to improve attrition rates from courses which will further increase the number of nursing students who graduate.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Department does not have a dedicated three to five strategy for supporting the training and development of advanced paediatric and neonatal nurse practitioners.</p><p> </p><p>It is Health Education England’s (HEE) responsibility to ensure that there is sufficient future supply of staff, including those needed in specialist fields such as this, to meet the workforce requirements of the English health system.</p><p> </p><p>As part of its ongoing work HEE continually looks to ensure that staff groups, such as those highlighted, have the correct planned workforce growth, consider whether new roles are required and ensure that existing undergraduate training and education meets the needs of both students and patients.</p><p> </p><p>At a local level, it is the responsibility of National Health Service organisations to ensure that their staff, through Continuing Professional Development, have the ongoing skills required to deliver safe and effective care to patients.</p> more like this
