The latest data available is through the 2015 Health Survey for Great Britain, published on 24 August (NatCen report), which estimated that the problem gambling prevalence rate among adults in Great Britain was 0.8% which equated to approximately 430,000 people. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/07/2018 answer text <p>The Gambling Commission requires all operators licensed under the Gambling Act 2005 to make a contribution towards the research, prevention and treatment of gambling-related harm. It does not specify how much this should be, nor which organisations should be supported.</p><p> </p><p>GambleAware is the leading charity commissioning research, education and treatment, and currently asks operators to donate a minimum of 0.1% of their Gross Gambling Yield (GGY). Most do, with GambleAware receiving £9.4m in 2017/18. Industry also made donations to other bodies supporting research, education and treatment, bringing industry’s collective support for RET to above 0.1% of its GGY.</p><p><ins class="ministerial">We considered research, education and treatment as part of our Review of Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility and published our response on 17 May. The Review looked at protections across the gambling industry and support for those who experience harm, including the arrangements for funding support.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">We want to see an effective and sustainable voluntary system, with improved coordination and better understanding of what measures are most effective to ensure future funding increases will be spent in the most effective way. Our response outlined a number of initiatives for improving the current system, increasing access to services and strengthening the evidence base. However, due to the relatively small numbers of problem gamblers captured in surveys, demonstrating statistically significant correlations to other health and social issues is difficult.</p><p> </p><p>The Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RGSB) and GambleAware are leading work to measure gambling-related harm more effectively. This will involve exploring existing data, including around correlations with health and social issues, in more detail. In addition, GambleAware commissioned research by IPPR into the cost of public services provided to problem gamblers, including on health and housing costs which reported in December 2016. The Gambling Commission recently published Gambling behaviour in Great Britain 2016, which reports participation, at-risk gambling and problem gambling rates. The data, drawn from combined Health surveys, shows that the rate of problem gambling in Great Britain was 0.7%, a figure which has remained relatively stable over many years.</p><p><br>The Government's response to the Review of Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility set out a number of initiatives to improve understanding of gambling-related harm, how to prevent and reduce it, the need for treatment and the most effective means of delivering it. GambleAware, an independent charity, leads on commissioning and funding research into gambling-related harm and supporting education and treatment programmes, taking into account the priorities set out by the RGSB.</p><p> </p><p>RGSB’s latest research programme includes as a priority work to measure gambling-related harm more effectively. This has been commissioned by GambleAware and is expected to be published in 2018. It is intended to lead to a set of metrics which can be used to measure and monitor the impact of gambling-related harm on a wider scale. We also set out measures to improve understanding of gambling-related harm, how to prevent and reduce it, the need for treatment and the most effective means of delivering it. We are working closely with the Gambling Commission, Public Health England, GambleAware and health bodies on the follow up to these initiatives.</p><p> </p><p>Prior to the Review, the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RGSB), the independent advisors to the Gambling Commission, published a three year National Responsible Gambling Strategy in 2016. The strategy identified 12 areas for action by a range of bodies, including developing a better understanding of gambling-related harm and identifying improvements in treatment.
