	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/11/2018 answer text <p>The UK has a proud history of providing protection to those who need it and this Government is committed to delivering a fair and humane asylum system.</p><p>Whilst the Government has not assessed the effect on the economy of granting asylum seekers the right to work in the UK, our current policy is consistent with EU law and permits asylum seekers to work, in jobs on the Shortage Occupation List, if they have been waiting for a decision on their claim for 12 months or more and the delay is through no fault of their own. The policy is designed to protect the resident labour market so that access to employment is prioritised for British citizens and lawful residents, including those granted refugee status. Those who are granted permission to work are restricted to jobs on the Shortage Occupation List, which can be found in the Immigration Rules Appendix K: shortage occupation list (<a href="https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-appendix-k-shortage-occupation-list" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-appendix-k-shortage-occupation-list</a>)</p><p>The data requested on the number of asylum seekers granted permission to work is only held on paper case files or within the notes sections of the Home Office's databases.
