These guarantees apply whether the UK leaves the EU with a deal or not. Applications for courses starting in academic year 2020/21 do not open until September 2019. We will ensure students and institutions have the information they need well in advance of that date.</p><p>Students from the EU make an important contribution to the universities sector and it is a testament to our system that so many students from abroad choose to come and study here. The arrangements for EU nationals will be considered as part of wider discussions about the UK's relationship with the EU. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/02/2019 answer text <p>The UK remains a highly attractive destination for both EU and non-EU students, with their numbers remaining at a record high. The total number of international students (EU and non-EU) studying in the UK has increased from 442,000 in 2016/17 to 458,000 in 2017/18.</p><p>The government fully recognises the important economic and cultural contribution that EU and international students make to the UK’s higher education sector. We want that contribution to continue and we are confident – given the world-class quality of our higher education sector – that it will. We welcome international students and there continues to be no limit on the number who can come here to study, nor any plans to limit any institution’s ability to recruit them.</p><p>That is why the government announced on 21 January that an international education strategy will be produced by the Department for Education and the Department for International Trade in 2019.
