star this property answer text <p>This Government has not undertaken an assessment of the feasibility of setting a precise date for the complete phasing out of single-use plastic bottles.</p><p> </p><p>In autumn 2017 an independent working group set up under the Litter Strategy for England held a call for evidence on measures to reduce littering of drinks containers and promote recycling. This included seeking evidence on the costs, benefits and impacts of deposit return schemes. The working group has recently submitted its report to Ministers, who will make a decision on next steps shortly.</p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>As part of the work on reducing the effect of plastic waste and to prioritise areas for further action, Defra has been reviewing documented sources of microplastic pollution entering the environment. It is clear that microplastics in various forms, including microplastic fibres arising from laundering textiles, are a significant source of freshwater and marine litter around the world. Other sources also need to be considered to help reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the environment.</p><p> </p><p>There are Evidence gaps in this area so we have commissioned research which will inform future policy options to further reduce the impact of plastic waste.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>It is clear that microplastics in various forms, including microfibres, are a significant and prevalent source of marine litter around the world.</p><p> </p><p>As part of the enhanced chemicals programme the Environment Agency will look more at the contribution of sewage treatment to microplastic. As with many chemicals the most effective solution is to reduce the sources of plastic getting into drainage systems in the first place.</p><p> </p> more like this

This is underpinned by a series of strategies that already have some specific targets in place, including statutory targets. The irreplaceable nature of ancient woodlands and their value is recognised in the National Planning Policy Framework.</p><p> </p><p>Paragraph 118 of the National Planning Policy Framework states that “planning permission should be refused for development resulting in the loss or deterioration of irreplaceable habitats, including ancient woodland and the loss of aged or veteran trees found outside ancient woodland, unless the need for, and benefits of, the development in that location clearly outweigh the loss.”</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The call for evidence on measures to reduce littering of drinks containers and promote recycling closed on 20 November 2017. This was held by an independent working group. The focus was rigid and flexible plastic, glass or metal drinks containers that are sold sealed, and used for the sale of alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages, often for consumption ‘on-the-go’.</p><p> </p><p>The working group is currently analysing responses to this call for evidence and is due to provide advice to Ministers on potential incentives for drinks containers early this year. Any decisions on suitable measures to then take forward will rest with Ministers.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government is committed to continuing to work with the industry to make the transition to peat alternatives and to overcome the barriers to their use. For example, we are jointly funding research with the industry, which includes commercial scale demonstration trials, to overcome barriers to peat replacement in professional horticulture. We have also worked with the industry to develop a Responsible Sourcing Scheme for Growing Media which allows manufacturers and retailers to make informed choices on growing media inputs to amateur/retail products, based on environmental and social impacts. We are continuing to support the industry as they put this scheme into practice.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p><p>As part of our planning for the UK’s exit from the EU we are developing a 25 Year Environment Plan and a renewed strategy on resources and waste. Officials are developing the plans for engagement with businesses, and views on the key barriers to resource efficiency and ideas for addressing these will be welcome.</p><p> </p><p>The online IsItWaste tool for self-assessment for the definition of waste currently has 981 assessments registered. This is cumulative since 2013. It would not include any self-assessments later deleted by the customer.</p><p> </p><p>The Environment Agency does not have information or data about the impact on investment in the waste sector from the temporary closure of the Definition of Waste panel.</p> more like this
