star this property answer text
The Department for Exiting the EU has engaged with a range of higher education institutions and groups through visits, meetings and forums. Over the coming weeks and months the department will continue to engage with key stakeholders in business and civil society, including universities, through roundtables, bi-laterals and visits across the UK.

We have been clear that we want to create an environment in which the UK as a whole can continue to be a world leader in research, science and the tertiary education sector more broadly. The government has announced that UK researchers can still apply for Horizon 2020 projects and the Treasury will underwrite the payment of such awards, even when specific projects continue beyond the UK’s departure from the EU. Equally, existing EU students and those starting courses in 2017/18 will continue to be eligible for student loans and will be for the duration of their course.

Jo Johnson - Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation – has also set up a forum with a number of senior representatives of UK research and innovation organisations to discuss opportunities and issues arising from the UK’s exit from the European Union. This group will work with Government to ensure it has the best evidence to keep the UK punching above its weight in research and innovation.

We believe that encouraging patients to use the NHS sensibly and responsibly is the right approach and we are supportive of local schemes to highlight the number of missed appointments to their patients. However, it is ultimately a matter for the local NHS and primary care providers to decide how best to raise awareness and implement measures to reduce missed appointments.

Primary care providers are encouraged to offer patients different ways to book appointments, send appointment reminders by text messages, and make it quick for patients to cancel or re-arrange appointments e.g. through the use of an online service.
more like this

star this property answer text
There is information readily available on chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) for both healthcare professionals and the general public via NHS Choices website. Further information is also provided in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) clinical guidance which can be found via their website. This information is provided in formats suitable for both professionals and the public. Both the NHS Choices and NICE guidance can be found at the following links:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-cfs/

www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg53

On 20 September 2017, NICE announced plans to undertake a full review of the guidance to ensure it reflects the latest available evidence.

Education and training is also an important feature in building the awareness of clinical professionals. In terms of education and training, the General Medical Council sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours that new United Kingdom medical graduates must be able to demonstrate and Royal Medical Colleges, such as the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) set the standards for postgraduate medical education in general practice. General practice is where most patients with CFS/ME are likely to be managed, and the condition is identified as a key area of clinical knowledge in the RCGP Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) content guide. The AKT is a summative assessment of the knowledge base that underpins general practice in the United Kingdom within the context of the National Health Service and is a key part of general practitioner’s qualifying exams.

Once fully qualified, clinicians are responsible for ensuring their own clinical knowledge remains up-to-date and for identifying learning needs as part of their continuing professional development. This activity should include taking account of new research and developments in guidance, such as that produced by NICE.
