star this property answer text <p>The safety of all passengers and rail staff remains our top priority. The rail industry is working to ensure mitigations are in place to ensure both passenger and staff welfare.</p><p>Extensive passenger communications have been issued, with advice to carry water and to only travel if necessary on the hottest days.</p><p>Many stations have prepared additional water supplies, and some major stations are equipped with free water dispensers. Wherever available, air conditioning will be in operation on trains to reduce in train temperatures.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Extreme heat can cause disruption on the railway due to issues such as overhead powerlines sagging in the heat, the increased likelihood of lineside fires, and rail buckling (when rails expand and curve).</p><p> </p><p>The Department continues to support the rail industry as they work to ensure mitigations, such as emergency speed restrictions, are implemented to protect infrastructure and ensure both passenger and staff welfare.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p> </p><p>The figure of £18m invested in stations has been included in a recent news release put out by the South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance. My understanding is that this figure represents the investment made in the financial year 2013/14, but the total investment made during the period over which these schemes were completed is £34m; £32m of which came from public bodies, and £2m from the private sector.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The safety of customers and staff is the top priority of Transport for London (TfL). TfL work as a team with London Underground (LU), the police, emergency services and my department, to prepare for, and deal with, incidents that threaten the security of the transport network. Station staff are supported by the LU Control Centre, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, working closely with the police, with access to CCTV cameras and other systems in order to manage and respond to incidents.</p><p> </p><p>LU will continue to ensure there are sufficient staff in place to maintain each station’s security, congestion control and emergency plans.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The department is confident that the changes introduced by Transport for London will not have a detrimental impact on passenger safety on the London Underground.</p><p> </p><p>Not every London Underground (LU) station has a Station Control Room, as they are not a safety or security requirement at all stations. In advance of making the recent changes, LU reviewed the requirement for a Control Room at each station to determine their necessity based on individual station and staff needs.</p><p> </p><p>At some locations it was decided that there was no longer a requirement for a Control Room as there were better ways to provide Control Room functionality in the station. Moving station staff into customer facing areas increases their ability to identify suspicious behaviour and to report it.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Fire safety regulations on London Underground are a matter for Transport for London (TfL). Under London Underground’s new staffing model introduced in April 2016, all London Underground stations continue to be staffed during traffic hours in line with the London Underground Rule Book – which includes defined minimum numbers of staff at sub-surface stations as required by the Fire Precautions (Sub-Surface Railway Stations) (England) Regulations 2009.</p><p> </p><p>The introduction of the new staffing model followed a review of individual stations’ Congestion Control and Emergency Plans, which identified various improvements to help maintain London Underground’s good safety record.</p> more like this
