star this property answer text <p>In December 2013, Defra and DFID announced that £10m of funding would be made available over the period 2014/15 - 2017/18 to help developing countries tackle the illegal wildlife trade, to be administered by Defra. In March 2015, the Secretary of State for International Development announced that an additional £3m would be made available for this purpose.</p><br /><p>Most of this funding, which is Official Development Assistance, is distributed through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund.</p><br /><p>The first round of the UK Government’s Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund opened for applications in June 2014, and 19 successful projects were announced in December 2014. A list of these can be found at: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/382616/iwt-challenge-fund-project-funding.pdf" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/382616/iwt-challenge-fund-project-funding.pdf</a></p><br /><p>To date, £5.3 million has been allocated to projects under the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund. Projects submit claims against their allocations on a quarterly basis, and the total spent, as at the end of October, was £2.1 million.</p><br /><p>I announced the opening of a second round of applications in August. We expect to announce the successful projects from the second round early in the new year.</p><br />

star this property answer text <p>In the UK’s Commitment to Action on the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT), published in February 2014, the Government committed to “take a national strategic approach to domestic action on IWT through . . . . funding the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) until 2016”. Defra and the Home Office together have provided £544,000 for the NWCU over 2014-15 and 2015-16.</p><br /><p>Decisions on future funding of the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit beyond March 2016 will be made as part of the current Spending Review process.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The UK’s top priority for the bass negotiations at December Council was to agree measures to allow us to achieve sustainable fishing at EU level by 2018, and the package agreed puts us on the right path to do so.</p><br /><p>The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea’s advice for bass in 2016 reflected its standard advice format for achieving the sustainable fishing standard the following year. The target year of 2018 agreed at the December Council for bass, however reflected the fact that the management of this stock through EU measures only began in 2015, which meant that it was necessary to take a more incremental approach, to reach sustainability in the fewest years realistically achievable.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The package of EU bass measures agreed at the December Fisheries Council included derogations and differentiated catch limits for fixed gillnets. The legislative arrangements do not include a mechanism for granting or withholding such provisions by Member States, although Member States may impose more stringent standards at national level if considered appropriate.</p><br /><p>With regard to the recommendations from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, I refer the hon. Defra provided ACRE with £2,312,000 for 2015-16 to distribute amongst Rural Community Councils, allowing them to continue their role in sustaining rural villages and communities. star this property answer text <p>Defra funds Rural Community Councils via the annual grant it allocates to Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE), the national voice for the 38 rural community councils. ACRE allocates this grant using a well-established funding formula. It reports back to Defra on how the grant is spent through quarterly reports and meetings with officials, and in its annual report and accounts. We will review the benefits of this spend in setting levels of grant for future years.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The pets checkers (carriers or agents) which carry out checks to ensure pets animals are compliant with Pet Travel Scheme rules are audited by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the results show that they are performing satisfactorily. In 2014, APHA audited close to 6,000 pets. Of these only 0.9% of the pets were found not to comply with the entry rules. These pets were either detained until their compliance could be established, re-exported or placed into quarantine.</p> more like this
