star this property answer text <p>The Government fully supports the growth of international rail services and regularly engages with European partners to discuss the potential for new routes. In May 2023 the Secretary of State met his Swiss counterpart and discussed the potential for a future direct rail connection between the UK and Switzerland. My officials have subsequently met with and continue to work with Swiss counterparts to explore this further.</p><p> </p><p>The potential for any new international services is subject to commercial appetite. My officials stand ready to engage with any prospective new operators where there are credible commercial proposals for new services.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government has provided support for the taxi and private hire vehicle sector throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of taxi and private hire vehicle drivers are self-employed and were therefore able to apply for grants through the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) before the scheme closed on 30 September 2021. Over the history of the SEISS, £28.1 billion has been paid in grants in total (up to 28 October 2021) and 2.9 million individuals have received a grant.</p><p>The Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) provides local councils with grant funding to support businesses that are severely impacted by Coronavirus and the rise of the Omicron variant, which are not eligible for other grant funding. There is no restriction on the number of grants a business may receive, subject to subsidy limits.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The Government is working with fleets and industry bodies to understand the diverse charging requirements of fleets, including those used by the logistics and warehousing sector.</p><p> </p><p>Through its Workplace Charging Scheme, the Government offers support to small and medium sized business for the installation of chargepoints, with grants of up to £350 per socket. As of 1 July 2023, 46,172 workplace installations have benefited from this scheme.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is also working with industry stakeholders to develop a zero emission HGV and coach infrastructure strategy for publication in 2024. The strategy will set strategic direction and outline the roles and responsibilities of government and industry to deliver the refuelling and recharging infrastructure required to meet the end of sale dates for new non-zero emission HGVs.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations refer to two schedules that can require Environmental Impact Assessments to be carried out by Network Rail in relation to works programmes. Network Rail works with legal advisors to advise on its schemes which includes compliance to legislation such as the Environmental Impact Assessment regulations. At a Westminster Hall Debate on 5 July I announced the formation of a working group to consider any regulatory issues and remedies, including the Commission’s recommendations. star this property answer text <p>The Government takes the impact of traffic noise on health, wellbeing and the natural environment seriously. Vehicles are required to meet strict noise limits before being placed on the market and police have powers to act if they suspect a vehicle is making excessive amounts of noise.</p><p> </p><p>On 2 August, the Department published the results of research into enforcement against excessive noise pollution from vehicles using “acoustic cameras”. This research has shown that the technology has the potential to be used for enforcement, but that there are still difficulties in accurately measuring noise from individual vehicles in busier traffic conditions. There is an active research programme to address these challenges and, in the longer term, create new tools for enforcement.</p> more like this
