star this property answer text <p>Every time the personal allowance increases, the marriage allowance automatically becomes more generous.</p><p>The increase to personal allowance to £12,500 means that, from April this year, eligible couples will be able to transfer £1,250, compared to £1,060 in 2015-16.</p><p>This means that in 2019-20, eligible couples can receive a tax reduction of up to £250, or £1,150 if they make a backdated claim to 2015-16.</p> more like this

Around 1.8m people have claimed the allowance to date.</p><p> </p><p>Our current best estimate assessment of the initial cost of this allowance is £140m in 2015-16, but this does not include the impact of any expected future claims, which can be backdated to this year. The total cost of this allowance is forecast to rise to £385m in 2015-16 once these claims are taken into account.</p><p> </p><p>An estimate of the initial cost of this allowance for 2016-17 will not be available until the end of the tax year. We forecast an eventual cost to the exchequer of £425m, once all backdated claims are taken into account.</p><p> </p><p>HM Treasury does not hold information relating to the income deciles of claimants or successful applicants of the Marriage Allowance. Previous analysis of the total eligible population has shown the majority of the benefits of this policy go to the bottom half of the income distribution. star this property answer text <p>Consistent increases by this government to the personal allowance have also increased the Marriage Allowance, as it is linked. The personal allowance increase announced at Autumn Budget means that in 2018-19, an individual will be able to transfer £1,190 to a partner, compared to £1,060 in 2015-16.</p><p> </p><p>This means that in 2018-19 the Marriage Allowance is worth £238 per year, or £900 if backdated up to 4 years.</p><p> </p><p>This government is showing continuing commitment to the Marriage Allowance, and announced at Autumn Budget 2017 an extension to allow claims on behalf of deceased partners.</p> more like this
