The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is an independent body and is responsible for the methods and processes that it uses in the development of its guidance, including the criteria used to determine whether topics should be routed to the technology appraisal or highly specialised technologies programmes. NICE made changes to its health technology evaluation manual in January 2022 following a comprehensive review of its methods and processes, including public consultation. As part of these changes, the eligibility criteria for the highly specialised technologies programme were clarified to make them clearer and more predictable.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is an independent body and is responsible for the decision-making processes that it operates.</p><p>NICE’s Topic Selection Oversight Panel (TSOP) is responsible for the selection of topics for guidance development in the Centre for Health Technology Evaluation. The group considers the available evidence as well as clinical and patient insights to apply the medicines and highly specialised technologies criteria and decide whether to route medicines to the technology appraisal or highly specialised technologies programmes, or to deselect the topic. The TSOP’s membership includes lay members to provide the perspective of patients, people who use services and carers in the selection and routing of topics. It also includes members with responsibility for providing clinical insights and expertise.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The recommendations made in Versus Arthritis’s Joint Replacement Support Package have been factored into NHS England’s planning for the care and support needed by people with arthritis waiting for treatment.</p><p>NHS England has also embedded Versus Arthritis’s ‘Let’s Move for Surgery’ toolkit on the My Planned Care website, which helps people waiting for surgery, and includes appropriate physical activity, help with managing pain and mental health support. unstar this property answer text <p>In September 2021, the Government published its review of overprescribing ‘Good for you, good for us, good for everybody’, ‘National overprescribing review report’. The review report evaluated the extent, causes and consequences of overprescribing and made recommendations to address it. A copy of the report can be found at the following link:</p><p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-overprescribing-review-report" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-overprescribing-review-report</a></p><p>Led by the National Clinical Director for Prescribing, NHS England and partner organisations are working to implement long term, sustainable reductions to overprescribing. This work includes: t</p><p>The development of national resources to help practices improve the consistency of repeat prescribing processes, supported by training;</p><p>the publication of NHS England’s prescribed medicines review report, ‘Prescribed medicines review: summary’ which includes information to help systems support patients who take medicines associated with dependence and withdrawalwithdrawal; and</p><p>interventions to reduce polypharmacy. unstar this property answer text <p>The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is the independent body responsible for developing evidence-based guidance for the National Health Service on whether new medicines represent a clinically and cost-effective use of resources. NICE’s guidance is based on a thorough assessment of the available evidence and developed through extensive engagement with stakeholders. NICE was unable to recommend bevacizumab (Avastin) as an effective use of NHS resources for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer, and it is not routinely funded on the NHS in England.</p><p> </p><p>NICE has been asked to consider updating its appraisals of bevacizumab for colorectal cancer given that there are now multiple biosimilars available, some at significantly lower cost than the price at which bevacizumab was originally assessed. However, NICE must also take into consideration wider considerations regarding the use of bevacizumab in different scenarios that have evolved since the original appraisals. NICE is exploring options and further information on any proposed changes will be made available in due course.</p>

The ‘2023/24 priorities and operational planning’ guidance, published on 23 December 2022, sets out key objectives to deliver this target over the year ahead. This includes supporting a more productive workforce, taking advantage of opportunities to deploy staff more flexibly, increasing theatre productivity, drawing on ‘Getting It Right First Time’ guidance, reducing agency spending, reducing corporate running costs, reducing procurement and supply chain costs, improving inventory management, and purchasing medicines at the most effective price point.</p> more like this
