unstar this property answer text <p>We take the issue of illegal trafficking of puppies very seriously.</p><p> </p><p>Responsibility for stopping the illegal movement of puppies begins in the country where they are born. When cases of illegal puppy movements under the Pet Travel Scheme are discovered, the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) working with Defra will raise instances of abuse of the scheme with the authorities in the relevant countries.</p><p> </p><p>Defra’s Chief Veterinary Officer has written to EU countries to raise concerns over illegal smuggling of puppies and animals and APHA has worked in partnership with the Dogs Trust at Dover where approx. 600 puppies have been seized and taken into quarantine since the initiative began.</p><p> </p><p>Defra also works closely with the Pet Advertising Advisory Group to drive up standards for online advertisements and make potential pet owners and website operators more aware of rogue dealers to reduce demand.</p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Leaving the European Union means leaving the Common Agricultural Policy. We now have an opportunity to take back control of our policies on agriculture and the environment.</p><p> </p><p>This Government has pledged to continue to commit the same cash total in funds for farm support for the duration of this parliament, providing much needed certainty to farmers and landowners.</p><p> </p><p>Continued support is critically important, and so is reform. We need to take the opportunity that being outside the Common Agricultural Policy will give us to use public money to reward environmentally responsible land use.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has pledged to work with farmers, food producers and environmentalists across Britain to devise a new agri-environment system.</p><p> </p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 it is an offence to be involved in or promote an animal fight. The maximum penalty for such an offence is six months’ imprisonment or an unlimited fine, or both. Offenders can also be banned from keeping or having any influence over the way animals are kept for anything up to life. The Government keeps maximum penalties under review and this includes sentencing trends, and whether there is any evidence that the courts may be finding their sentencing powers inadequate.</p><p> </p> more like this

Over the last six years, the Department for International Development (DfID) has provided £18 million to Fairtrade International to support their work and strengthen the global Fairtrade system. This includes Fairtrade producer and worker organisations that are the drivers of inclusive economic, environmental and social development in their communities around the world. DfID continues to actively engage with Fairtrade on a variety of projects and campaigns, such as the forthcoming Fairtrade Fortnight from 27 February to 12 March.</p><p> </p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Ministers and officials have regular discussions with farming stakeholders about a range of topics, including matters relating to start-ups and co-operatives.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In September 2018 the government published a Policy Statement, alongside the introduction of the Agriculture Bill. This statement included a series of proposals to create more opportunities for new farmers, and plans for continuing to encourage collaboration between agricultural producers after we have left the Common Agricultural Policy.</p><p> </p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Defra is the lead department for coordinating the Greening Government Commitments, which set out the actions UK government departments and their agencies will take to reduce their impacts on the environment. Progress towards targets is reported in the Annual Report on the Greening Government Commitments. These commitments include specific requirements for departments to report on how sustainability is embedded in their procurement policies and procedures, including managing sustainability risks within the supply chain.</p><p> </p><p>The Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, published in January 2018, includes a commitment to remove all single use consumer plastics from central government offices. This commitment will be delivered and reported under the sustainable procurement reporting section of the Greening Government Commitments. A number of departments, including Defra, are already taking steps to eliminate single use consumer plastics from their operations. Plastic drinking cups have been removed from Defra offices and replaced by glasses, and plastic coffee cups are soon to be banned from office catering outlets. The department is currently tendering for a new catering contract which will prohibit single use plastics from the summer of 2018.</p><p> </p>
