unstar this property answer text <p>In FY22/23 the China Capability programme funded 100 new places in part-time Mandarin lessons for staff across government, from beginner to advanced level, which will be expanded over the next 12 months. This is in addition to part-time FCDO Mandarin language classes, which are available to any FCDO staff member on an optional basis. The FCDO also ensures there is a pipeline of staff undertaking full-time language training in preparation for specific postings to the China network.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The UK did not invite the Governor of Xinjiang to visit and under no circumstance would he have been offered a Ministerial meeting. The scale and severity of human rights violations in Xinjiang is harrowing and the UK government consistently raises our concerns with Beijing at the highest levels. The Foreign Secretary did so with his Chinese counterpart on 20 February. As Minister Docherty stated in the debate on 9 February, relevant FCDO Ministers were made aware of the possible visit in the usual way, after officials were notified by the Chinese Embassy in January. Ministers agreed that officials should be prepared to offer a meeting to make clear the UK's abhorrence at the treatment of Uyghur people and to reiterate that we will not relent from exposing China's unacceptable human rights violations. No UK official has met Chinese officials sanctioned by the US over the last 12 months.</p> more like this

In my meetings with members of the Cambodian Government, including Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, I reaffirmed the UK's support for ASEAN leadership on the situation in Myanmar, and pressed on the importance of the Five Point Consensus.</p><p>I expressed concern at the escalating violence in Myanmar and urged Cambodia to use its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2022 to move towards a lasting solution to the crisis.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The UK remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. In FY 2020-21 we will spend over £40m across a range of activities aimed at strengthening Ukraine's resilience against hostile state actors, including conflict stabilisation, security and defence, economic development and governance reforms. Specific activities include:</p><ul><li>Defensive, non-escalatory military training delivered through Operation ORBITAL, which has now trained over 20,000 troops and has been expanded to incorporate maritime and air capacity building. As part of this, the UK is coordinating and leading allied contributions to develop Ukraine's Navy in a multinational Maritime Training Initiative (MTI) which commenced in September 2020.</li><li>Secondment of a large number of UK personnel to the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission, including one of the Deputy Chief Monitors.</li><li>A broad range of support aimed at strengthening Ukraine's ability to counter the de-stabilising effects of disinformation, as well as develop independent media and media literacy.</li></ul>
