star this property answer text <p>The UK maintains that a short set of goals and targets to replace the Millennium Development Goals would be ideal, but we recognise the strong consensus among UN member states to maintain the Sustainable Development goals and targets on the Open Working Group in their current form.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The UK has consistently supported the content of the proposed Sustainable Development Goals. We welcome in particular Goal 1 on ending extreme poverty, Goal 5 on Gender which strongly reflects UK priorities including ending female genital mutilation and early forced marriage, and Goal 16 on peaceful and inclusive societies, good governance, and access to justice.</p> more like this

Our support is increasing to reflect rising needs from the recent influx of refugees, predominantly from South Sudan. In the coming year, we plan to provide food to more than 900,000 refugees, shelter to 116,000 refugees, access to clean water for more than 212,000 refugees and nutritional support to more than 215,000 children.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The UK welcomed the UN Secretary-General’s Synthesis Report as a useful contribution to the post-2015 negotiations when it was released in December 2014. In particular we welcomed his proposal for six ‘essential elements’ as a way to communicate the agenda in an inspiring and concise way to citizens everywhere. We were also pleased to note his suggestion that the UN System conducts a technical review of the Sustainable Development Goal targets to ensure that they are as implementable as possible.</p> more like this

The World Health Organisation tests and certifies the efficacy of new insecticide products such as bednets and both the Global Fund and our goods and equipment supplier only procure WHO approved bednets.</p> more like this

There is also significant DFID-USAID collaboration, at official and Ministerial level, on global health programmes and policies, including joint funding arrangements at country level and joint engagement on international partnerships.</p><p> </p><p>The previous Secretary of State has had significant engagement with her US counterpart, USAID Administrator Mark Green. They had agreed to hold the next UK/US strategic dialogue on development in early 2018; while the exact date has not yet been confirmed it is likely to be in January or February.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Drug resistance, along with insecticide resistance, poses a real threat to recent progress in tackling malaria. As a leading global funder of efforts to tackle malaria, DFID is taking action through research funding, bilateral programmes, together with our substantial funding to multilateral institutions such as the Global Fund. This support improves the quality of drug management programmes. We are also responding to the threat by providing funding for the development of new, effective, drugs.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>DFID tackles malaria through bilateral programmes in countries, research, multilateral funding to the Global Fund and the World Health Organisation, and through activities such as strengthening health systems in endemic countries. DFID is currently the second largest global funder of the effort against malaria and expects to remain a leading global donor in the future.</p><p>DFID’s level of spend on direct malaria control activities and multilateral contributions for 2011-2015, including the £1.1 billion investment in the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, are published as part of “<a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/statistics-on-international-development-2016" target="_blank">Data underlying Statistics on International Development</a>” alongside wider DFID and UK Government spending. DFID’s estimates of total UK Government malaria spend take into account the broader activities to tackle malaria, and show spend of £499m for 2016/17.</p> more like this

An external Conflict Sensitivity Resource Facility for South Sudan has been established that provides the Department, implementing partners and other donors with guidance, training and analysis on conflict sensitivity. DFID South Sudan has also issued a set of minimum standards for all staff and implementing partners on conflict sensitivity that requires robust conflict analysis and a detailed approach to conflict sensitivity including through programme design, recruitment and monitoring and evaluation practices.</p> more like this
