star this property answer text <p>The UK is clear about its sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago, which it administers as the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), and strongly rejects Mauritius' claim that the Territory is part of Mauritius. This is a bilateral issue and we are committed to resolving it through bilateral discussions. We are disappointed that the UN General Assembly has referred this bilateral issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for an Advisory Opinion. This is an inappropriate use of the ICJ Advisory Opinion mechanism and sets an unwelcome precedent for other bilateral issues. We will robustly defend our position at the ICJ.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Mauritius amended its Constitution in 1982 to include the Chagos Archipelago (which the UK administers as the British Indian Ocean Territory) within its Territory. The Government of Mauritius repeatedly makes the claim both in public and private that the Chagos Archipelago is part of Mauritius. Most recently Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth made this point during his speech at the UN General Assembly in September. The UK is clear about its sovereignty of the British Indian Ocean Territory and strongly rejects Mauritius' claim that the Territory is part of Mauritius.</p> more like this

The ceasefire ended on 9 January. We condem the subsequent attacks carried out by the ELN against civilian and military targets on 10 January. The UN Security Council has called for both sides to prevent a return to conflict.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We encourage the Colombian Government to invite the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights to visit Colombia.</p><p>At the request of the Colombian Government, the UK led negotiations which resulted in UNSC resolution 2377. The resolution establishes the mandate of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia to monitor and verify the implementation of the Peace Agreement with the FARC. I support the work of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Colombia, which monitors the human rights situation and works closely with the UN Mission. On 20 December 2017, I announced that the OHCHR would be included in a package of additional UK support to the Peace Process in Colombia. ​</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government is concerned about the fragile, political and security situation in Honduras. We continue to urge all sides to pursue a resolution through dialogue and to avoid violence. The Government condemns attacks and threats against journalists, peaceful protesters and human rights defenders.</p><p>Following confirmation on 5 January by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of the re-election of Juan Orlando Hernandez, the British Ambassador to Honduras issued a statement calling on the authorities to protect human rights and work to restore confidence in national institutions. We support the conclusions of the EU Election Observer Mission, and encorage the Government of Honduras to implement recommended reforms to the electoral system in advance of future elections.</p> more like this

We also thank the departing representative, Mr Todd Howland, for his leadership of the UN Office for Human Rights in Colombia since 2012. The office has played a vital role in supporting those working to improve human rights in Colombia. In December 2017, I was pleased to announce a package of support for Colombia’s peace process that included £400k in financial support for the UN Office for Human Rights.</p> more like this
