We are committed to supporting the sector whilst it responds to changing consumer expectations and recognise that 82% of sales by value are still in physical stores.</p><p> </p><p>The industry led Retail Sector Council has brought Government and industry together. Its aim is to accelerate positive change, increase the productivity of the sector, and ensure the sector remains robust and sustainable to continue providing a valuable service to consumers and the community.</p><p> </p><p>Government is also taking steps to help high streets and communities adapt. On 26th August, my rt. hon. Friends the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government announced the expansion of the Future High Streets Fund from £675m to £1bn which will enable more local areas in England to invest in town centre infrastructure, increase access to high streets and support redevelopment and densification around high streets.</p><p> </p><p>We have also launched ​a new forward-thinking High Streets Task Force supporting local leaders to revitalise high streets and town centres. ​The High Streets Task Force will be comprised of experts who will provide tailored guidance and advice to local authorities and other local partners seeking to breathe new life into their local high streets and town centres.</p><p> </p><p>Since 2010, Government has helped create over 360 town teams, and given over £18million to towns - funding successful initiatives such as &quot;Love Your Local Market&quot;, the &quot;Great British High Street&quot; and also supporting Small Business Saturday UK, where an estimated £812 million was spent with small businesses across the UK for Small Business Saturday in 2018, up from £748 million in 2017.</p> answering member constituency Rochester and Strood answering member printed Kelly Tolhurst question first answered 07/10/2019 15:08:56 answering member 4487 label Biography information for Kelly Tolhurst previous answer version 137143 answering member constituency Rochester and Strood answering member printed Kelly Tolhurst answering member 4487 label Biography information for Kelly Tolhurst

More people are involved in retailing than in any other single industry in the country.</p><p> </p><p>There were 84,000 vacancies in the retail sector as of August 2019.</p><p> </p><p>In 2018, Government established the industry led Retail Sector Council to bring Government and industry together to boost the sector’s productivity and economic health. The Council has agreed its six priority work areas with four already underway. These are: Costs to Business, Skills and Lifelong Learning, Industrial Strategy and Employment workstreams.</p><p> </p><p>As part of wider Government efforts to support adult training, we are also investing £100m to develop The National Retraining Scheme, which will help prepare adults for future changes to the economy, including those brought about by automation, and help them retrain into better jobs. This funding has allowed us to start delivering the first part of the service, Get Help to Retrain, whilst developing and evaluating as we build-up the scheme.</p><p> </p><p>We have introduced Get Help to Retrain to 6 areas of England and we will be rolling it out across England in 2020. In July 2019, my rt. hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced a £3.6 billion Towns Fund to re-energise local economies so that everyone can share in a new era of prosperity. This included £1 billion for the Future High Streets Fund, which will support local areas in England to renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that improves experience, drives growth and ensures future sustainability.</p><p>We are also supporting local leadership with a High Streets Task Force, giving high streets and town centres expert advice to adapt and thrive. This will provide hands-on support to local areas to develop data-driven innovative strategies and connect local areas to relevant experts. The Task Force will also provide training and help to improve coordination between different groups working to improve their high streets which includes retailers.</p><p>The Government has also established the industry led Retail Sector Council​ to bring Government and industry together to boost the sector's productivity and economic health. The Council has established its six priority workstreams which includes the Industrial Strategy with a focus on place. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/10/2019 answer text <p>DFID responded immediately to help those affected by hurricane Dorian through the deployment of a team of humanitarian experts to The Bahamas. Working alongside the Bahamas Government’s National Emergency Management Association, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency and international partners, they helped assess the scale of needs, coordinate the emergency response and ensure aid quickly reached those affected.</p><p> </p><p>Through the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Mounts Bay the UK were able to rapidly distribute emergency supplies, assist communities who were cut off, and clear debris to enable additional support to arrive. Mounts Bay has been in the Caribbean, loaded with relief supplies, since June to prepare for and provide life-saving emergency assistance in emergencies like Dorian.</p><p> </p><p>The UK committed up to £1.5 million towards the immediate humanitarian response. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/10/2019 answer text <p>We have national programmes to control salmonella in poultry and protect public health, which require regular sampling of laying flocks. Where laying flock samples test positive for regulated strains of salmonella, the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) will alert the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Public Health England (PHE) and restrictions on the eggs will be put in place to protect public health which will apply for the life of the affected flock. Eggs from such flocks cannot be sold as fresh table eggs, but must be either processed by heat treatment to eliminate salmonella before entering the food chain, or disposed of outside the food chain as Animal by Products.</p><p> </p><p>The General Food Law EU Regulation 178/2002 will be transferred into UK law at the point of exit by the European Union (Withdrawal) Act. Inoperabilities in 178/2002 have been addressed by The General Food Law (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019. EU Regulation 178/2002 lays down that food placed on the market must be safe to eat - it must not be ‘injurious to health’ or ‘unfit for human consumption’. Food businesses are required to notify the competent authorities, such as the local authority or the FSA, if they suspect that a product placed on the market does not comply with safety requirements. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/10/2019 answer text <p>The government is committed to halving rough sleeping by 2022, before ending it altogether and has now committed over £1.2 billion to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over the spending review period to April 2020.</p><p>In the recent Spending Round we announced £422 million funding for homelessness in 2020/21, an increase of £54 million.</p><p>The government changed the law and the Homelessness Reduction Act (HRA), which is the most ambitious legislation in this area in decades, came into force this April. The HRA requires councils to provide early support for those at risk of having nowhere left to go. The government is also boosting access to affordable housing, and making renting more secure.</p><p>We also recognise the challenges that the cold weather poses for those who are sleeping rough. On 12 September 2019, we launched a second year of the Cold Weather Fund. This £10 million fund will be available to all local authorities in England to provide a robust, local response to support as many rough sleepers as possible off the streets during the winter period. This is double the funding made available last winter. Local authorities will be able to access this funding until March 2020.</p><p>Whilst we recognise that suitable housing is a key part of the solution, health services have a significant role to play, alongside other public services. MHCLG is working with the DHSC to ensure that rough sleepers have the health care they need, when the need it. This includes several commitments that were made in the Rough Sleeping Strategy, such as:</p><ul><li>committing £30 million for mental health services from NHS England for rough sleeping over the next five years</li><li>providing up to £2 million in health funding to test models of community-based provision designed to enable access to health and support services for people who are sleeping rough.</li><li>working with Safeguarding Adult Boards to ensure that Safeguarding Adult Reviews where appropriate. Lessons learned from these reviews will inform improvements in local systems and services.</li></ul><p>Professor Dame Carol Black has been appointed to carry out a major review of drug misuse.
