The British Government believes that a body with the power to investigate allegations of mistreatment in a timely, independent and transparent manner can be of great benefit to Bahraini society.

The Bahraini Ministry of Interior Ombudsman was established as an independent oversight body by Royal Decree in 2012. In 2013 the International Ombudsman Institute acknowledged that the Ministry of Interior Ombudsman fulfils its criteria for voting membership, stating that the organisation "is functionally independent of any public authority over which jurisdiction is held." It was the first organisation of its kind in the region and remains unique. In 2014 the Ministry of Interior Ombudsman's Office won the EU's Chaillot Prize for the promotion of human rights in the Gulf Cooperation Council region.
more like this

The human rights situation in Iran remains deeply worrying and this includes Iran's approach to freedom of religion and belief. The treatment of the Baha'i community is of particular concern. The latest report of the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran sets out the repression and harassment that Baha'is suffer in Iran. This includes restrictions on the types of businesses and jobs Baha'is can have, unequal treatment of Baha'i employees, and seizures of Baha'i businesses and property. We hope to highlight the situation of the Baha'i with the UN General Assembly Third Committee in New York.

more like this

Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are essential to a free and open society.

We expressed our concern about Iranian treatment of BBC Persian staff at the UN Human Rights Council on 12 March and both the Foreign Secretary and I have raised the issue, including the criminal charges, with our Iranian counterparts on several occasions.
