DFID is a leading supporter of the effort to meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2020 targets, including a 40% reduction in malaria cases and deaths. We are the second largest donor, contributing 16% of the global spend on malaria control and elimination, with the rest coming from other donors, governments of endemic countries, and the private sector. Funding assessments are conducted by WHO. It results in people having to take time off work because of illness, worker absenteeism, and reduced worker productivity. These effects slow economic growth in malaria-endemic countries and have an impact on their ability to trade with countries including the UK. We have, however, examined all options as part of our determination to do everything we can to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.</p><p> </p><p>Airdrops, manned or using drones, are not capable of meeting either the scale of needs or delivering many of the kinds of aid that could address the priority needs that we see in Syria (e.g. safe drinking water, health support). Furthermore, we judge that such an operation would carry a high level of risk because the consent is needed of those who control the airspace and those on the ground that could threaten aircraft. DFID has education programmes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces that support the implementation of Pakistan’s 2006 reformed curriculum, which teaches religious tolerance and respect for diversity. The new training covers human rights and religious freedom. In KP the induction programme includes a module to promote teacher tolerance in diverse classrooms and a sub-module that specifically focuses on creating an inclusive learning environment for students from religious minorities.
