	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/10/2015 answer text <p>The Electoral Commission does not maintain the electoral registers, which is the statutory duty of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and their teams. The Electoral Commission issues guidance to EROs about how to deliver both well run elections and public awareness campaigns to make sure voters are aware of when and how to register to vote. The Commission also runs its own public awareness campaigns to remind people to register to vote and to support the activity of EROs. During its campaign before the 2015 General Election there were 1,561,093 additions to the electoral registers, as detailed in its <a href="http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/190941/May-2015-polls-public-awareness-activity-report.pdf" target="_blank">campaign evaluation report</a>.</p><p>In June 2015 the Electoral Commission published its assessment of the progress with transition to Individual Electoral Registration (IER). An updated version of this assessment was recently laid in the House Library amending a small number of typographical errors found in background figures, none of which affected the findings of the assessment or the Commission’s advice.</p><p>The Commission’s June IER assessment did not include an estimate of levels of accuracy and completeness of the registers. The Commission’s last report on this was published in 2014. The June report did note, however, that activities such as the introduction of IER and the introduction of online registration are likely to have had a positive impact on accuracy and completeness. However, it was also clear that others will have had a negative effect, such as the lack of comprehensive household canvassing activity in 2014.</p><p>The Electoral Commission has made clear that it does not support the Government’s decision to bring forward the end of the transition to IER to 1 December 2015 and has noted instead that this should remain as 1 December 2016, as Parliament originally decided. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/06/2015 answer text <p>The system of right to rent checks which we introduced through the Immigration Act 2014 enables a landlord to delegate the responsibility for conducting a check on a tenant’s status to a lettings agent, together with any associated liability for a penalty. Where a tenant sublets the accommodation to another person, the legislation provides that the tenant is responsible for conducting a right to rent check, and liable for any penalty for not doing so, unless it has been agreed by both parties that the check will be performed by the landlord or an agent. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/01/2015 answer text <p>The Government is deeply concerned about the crisis in Syria, the suffering and hardship it is causing for millions of displaced Syrians in the region, and the strain it is placing on their host countries. Given the scale of the crisis, <br>we believe the most effective way to ensure the UK’s help has the greatest impact for displaced people and their host countries is through substantial humanitarian aid and actively seeking an end to the conflict so that refugees <br>can return to their homes and livelihoods safely. <br><br>We have committed £700 million in response to the crisis, making us the secondlargest bilateral donor after the USA, and UK funding is helping to support hundreds of thousands of displaced people in the region, providing food, healthcare and essential supplies. Compared with aid, offering protection in the UK can only ever help a minority of those in need.<br><br>However, we recognise that there are some very vulnerable refugees who cannot be supported effectively in the region. In January, we launched the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation (VPR) scheme to offer protection in the UK to <br>those most at risk, particularly women and children at risk, those in need of medical care and survivors of torture and violence. <br><br>The scheme is based on need rather than fulfilling a quota, but we expect it to help several hundred people over three years, and groups are arriving in the UK on a regular basis. This is in addition to our consideration of Syrian asylum claims <br>lodged in the UK under our normal rules; since the crisis began in 2011, we have granted asylum or other forms of leave to over 3,400 Syrian nationals.<br><br>We believe that the best way for the UK to help those in need is to continue to focus our efforts on substantial aid, actively seeking a resolution to the crisis and helping some of the most vulnerable people through the VPR scheme. <br>We therefore have no current plans to take steps beyond these measures to facilitate entry to the UK for displaced Syrians.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> answering member constituency Old Bexley and Sidcup answering member printed James Brokenshire question first answered 15/01/2015 15:00:48 answering member 1530 label Biography information for James Brokenshire
